Young Artist Award / Best Actress in a Feature Film

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Young Artist Award for Best Actress in a Feature Film is one of the awards given annually by the Young Artist Foundation , a non-profit organization founded in 1979 . It is aimed at young actresses under the age of 21 who have excelled in a lead role in a feature film while working in the film industry . From 1979 to 2000 the award was known under the title Youth in Film Award for Best Actress in a Feature Film , as well as numerous other variations over the years, although the basic idea behind the award has not changed since its inception. The winners will be selected in a secret ballot by the 125 members of the Young Artist Association , as well as previous Youth in Film and Young Artist Award winners.

history

Over the past 34 years, the Young Artist Association has given a total of 44 awards in the Best Actress in a Feature Film category to 40 different actresses. The winners of the award will receive the traditional Young Artist Award statuette, a gold-plated figure of a man with a five-pointed star above his head, reminiscent of a small Oscar statuette the size of a child. The first winner was Diane Lane , who won the 1979 Youth in Film Awards for her role in I love you - I love you - Je t'aime . The last winners so far were Kathryn Newton and Quvenzhané Wallis , who were honored for their roles in Paranormal Activity 4 and Beasts of the Southern Wild at the Young Artist Awards 2013 .

In the history of the award, the category Best Actress in a Feature Film has been split several times. Up until the 3rd award ceremony in 1981, all actresses could be nominated for the category, regardless of whether the role was viewed as a main or a supporting role. At the 1982 Youth in Film Awards , due to this fact, the Best Supporting Actress in a Feature Film category was introduced as a separate award. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the category was split into three awards, 1987 , 1989 and 1994 . During these three years, the Young Artist Association divided the category into four sub-categories, Best Female Superstar in a Feature Film , Best Lead Actress in a Feature Film (Drama) , Best Lead Actress in a Feature Film (Comedy or Fantasy), and Best Actress in a Feature Film (Horror or Mystery) . However, after the 15th award, the organization merged these sub-categories back into one.

Starting with the Youth in Film Awards in 1993 , the organization split the category one more time, introducing a category for young film actresses under the age of ten. The category Best Actress in a Feature Film - Ten Years or Younger became an integral part of the Young Artist Awards and is still awarded today (as of 2013). Despite the creation of a category for actresses aged ten or younger, some leading actresses under ten continue to be nominated in that category.

Records

While the Young Artist Association nowadays has strict requirements regarding the age of nominees for a Young Artist Award, they originally did not have any particular age restrictions. Today, candidates eligible for a Young Artist Award must be between the ages of five and 21 at the time of filming for that project. However, the oldest winner of the Best Actress in a Feature Film Award is Lea Thompson , who at the time of her win was for Isn't She Wonderful? was 26 years old at the ninth time the awards were presented . The youngest winner is Robin Weisman , who was six years old when she won for Three Men and a Little Lady at the 12th Youth in Film Awards .

The following is a list of records of the most frequent nominees and winners in the Best Actress in a Feature Film category . The winners and nominees in the other film categories, such as Best Supporting Actress in a Feature Film , Best Actress in a Feature Film - Ten Years or Younger, and Best Lead Actress in an International Feature Film , are not counted.

Winners and nominees

For the first 23 awards, the application period spanned two calendar years due to the many television awards that are also presented by the Young Artist Association. For example, the first award ceremony, held in November 1979, honored young artists who appeared in television series and in feature films released between September 1, 1978 and August 31, 1979. Starting with the 24th Young Artist Awards, which took place in March 2003, the application period was extended to a full calendar year, from January 1st to December 31st, similar to the Oscars .
