action
Watts plays the drums and is friends with Keith Nelson, a painter. They are considered outsiders at their high school . The beautiful Amanda Jones is middle class and goes out with Hardy Jenns, a wealthy upper class boy.
When Keith starts to rave about Amanda, he realizes that Hardy is only using her and treating her as property. He tries very hard to get closer to Amanda, and when she finally dumps Hardy, he makes an appointment with her. Watts slowly becomes aware of her feelings for Keith. Despite jealousy, she finally helps him - only to make it clear to him that Amanda is not his collar size.
Hardy feels a great humiliation and wants to finish off the adversary with the help of his friends. Before that, Amanda and Keith talk about a grandiose date. They admit that they have used each other and start over. The two are chauffeured by Watts, who uses every opportunity to show Amanda the claws.
They go to the party at Hardy's parents' house, even though all three of them know what is going to happen there. Keith knows he'll have to face Hardy sooner or later, but Amanda asks to let Keith go. For this, Hardy demands his ex-girlfriend back and insists that she should beg in front of all the guests.
The situation eases when the bully Duncan and his friends come to the rescue. Keith holds her back because Hardy has done enough to himself. Instead, Amanda gives him two slaps in the face with satisfaction in front of his party guests.
Outside, Amanda and Keith meet Watts, who has been waiting at the car. When she says goodbye, Keith becomes aware of how he feels about Watts. Amanda tells Keith to listen to his heart and so he runs after Watts.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on February 27, 1987, Isn't she wonderful? was another film in which Hughes and his people showed the "special ability" to make an entertaining film about teenagers. It shows the protagonists' insecurity, giving and pain. All representations are appealing, especially those by Masterson.
Film service wrote that the film was a "superficial teenage variant of the" ugly duckling "motif” . It resembles “a series product in terms of staging and acting” and is more embarrassing than entertaining.
Cinema magazine wrote that the "teen comedy" was a "funny, romantic dance of love" . Hughes and Deutch would have created a "charming romance about teenage heartbreak in the stylish eighties" .
