The Similaunhütte is an alpine refuge and is located on the Niederjoch in the Schnalskamm of the Ötztal Alps , which is the border between the Austrian North Tyrol and the Italian South Tyrol . The hut is not far from the border on Italian territory in the Texel Group Nature Park . The hut is private, but operated like an Alpine Club hut.

The hut is near the Tisenjoch, where Ötzi was found .

Increase opportunities

From the north, the Vent hut can be reached in 4½ hours. The marked ascent leads past the Martin-Busch-Hütte and over the north-western side of the moraine of the Niederjochferner . The direct route along the former glacier is also possible from the hut.

From the south, a marked ascent leads from Vernagt reservoir in Schnalstal to the hut in 4 hours. On this ascent, it is possible to transport rucksacks via the hut's material cable car .

Tour possibilities

The most popular summit tours from the Similaunhütte are as follows:

In addition to the Martin-Busch-Hütte , which is on the ascent from the north, the Hochjochhospiz in the Rofental and the Schöne-Aussicht-Hütte on the Hochjoch can be reached from the Similaunhütte. For the latter transitions, 4 hours are estimated.

history

Serafin Gurschler (1830–1915), landlord from Kurzras , who also built the first Schöne-Aussicht-Hütte , built the predecessor of today's hut in 1899. However, this shelter, which was managed from the beginning, with ten beds, soon became too small and had to be expanded in 1906. In 1912, Alois Platzgummer (1872–1961) took over the hut after marriage. After the First World War it was briefly expropriated, but soon again privately managed. In the interwar period, minor extensions and central heating were installed. The hut was temporarily closed during the Second World War . In 1956, Alois Platzgummer (son of the older Hüttenwirt, 1911–1969) built a material ropeway, and the Italian financial police built a concrete barrack nearby, which has now been razed to the ground. From 1966 to 1967 the hut was again confiscated and occupied by the military because of the unrest and bomb attacks in South Tyrol, and it has been in operation again since 1970.

Shaft drive into Schnalstal

A route leads over the Niederjoch, past the Similaunhütte, on which sheep are driven from Schnalstal into Ötztal at the beginning of June , only to return the same way in mid-September.
