He's Just Not That Into You (Original title: He's Just Not That Into You ) is an episodic romantic comedy from 2009 directed by Ken Kwapis .

action

The film is about singles and couples in Baltimore (USA) who struggle with the problems of getting to know each other, moving in together, during a relationship and also cheating. Some of the main characters know each other, but they never come together in a larger group.

The title statement He's just not into you is explained with a few faded-in answers that are commented on by people who otherwise don't play a role in the film.

  • ... if he doesn't call.
  • ... if he doesn't marry you.
  • ... when she doesn't sleep with you.
  • ... when he sleeps with someone else.

At the beginning Gigi has a date with the real estate agent Conor, but he doesn't call her afterwards. But she wants to meet him and goes to the bar, which he often goes to. But the owner Alex makes it clear to her that a man no longer wants to know anything from a woman if he does not contact her. If he wants something, he will definitely try. Gigi then makes an appointment with another man and gets advice from Alex. This just happened in a situation when he was also dealing with a woman, but still answered Gigi's call in detail.

Conor wants a relationship with Anna, with whom he once had a one-night stand and has been holding him since then. But Anna doesn't believe in solid relationships and gets involved in an affair with married Ben. Ben's marriage is not a lucky star because years ago his wife Janine only gave him the choice between marriage and separation. So he was forced into marriage. The renovation of the apartment is stressing Janine; on top of that she finds cigarettes in the apartment. Her father had lung cancer and so she confronts Ben. He denies it and blames it on the craftsmen.

Ben's best friend Neil has been with Beth for seven years, but he is not thinking about getting married. Beth puts him under pressure, but when he still doesn't want to, she puts him in front of the door. Beth's sister gets married, but her father has a heart attack at the party. The new family doesn't take care of the sick man, but Neil reappears and helps Beth with the care. Beth then decides that she can be happy with Neil even without a marriage certificate. In the end he changed his mind and proposed marriage to Beth.

Anna ends her relationship with Ben when he tries to save his marriage and flees to Conor. Shortly afterwards Janine finds the cigarettes in Ben's personal belongings and exposes him to be a liar. She packs his things ready for collection and demands a divorce.

Conor has contact via Myspace with the ad saleswoman Mary, who is advised on relationship matters by her gay colleagues. In their opinion, MySpace is only suitable for one-night stands. Mary arranges an ad for Conor's brokerage agency in her magazine. When Conor offers Anna to put their relationship on a firm footing and move in together, this refuses, and the two separate. When Conor and Mary meet face-to-face by chance, they sparks.

Alex arranges a date for Gigi with his friend Bill, but when the date falls through and Alex shows up, Gigi believes that he has planned everything and wants her. She is supposed to help him at a party he organizes, which confirms her view. So at the end, when all the guests have left, she throws herself at his neck, but the latter rejects her. But soon Alex actually shows symptoms of being in love and is even approached about it by his employees. After a real date with Bill, Alex steps on Gigi's threshold again, but she wants to throw him out. Still, he persuades them to try it together.

background

  • The script of the film is based on the self-help book He's Just Not That Into You - The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys (German book title: He's just not into you: Why women never want to understand what men really mean ) by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo. The book, in turn, was inspired by an episode of the television series Sex and the City (episode 78: Pick-a-Little, Talk-a-Little ; German episode title: Reden ist Silber ... ).
  • Scenes with Theresa Russell in the role of Anna's mother were filmed, which were not included in the final version of the film, but can be seen on the DVD as unused scenes.

Reviews

  • The Lexicon of International Films writes: “Ensemble film about errors and omissions in the search for the right person, in which the fates of a number of prominent protagonists intersect. Episodic comedy whose staging lacks depth and originality. Well-known comedy clichés are overused, the plot develops all too predictably. Only individual performances of the accomplished actresses are remarkable. "
  • Julia Evers wrote in OÖN on February 14, 2009 that the film had an illustrious cast who fluttered through dating wisdom and gender truths, which literally smelled of girls' pleasure. However, after a few wonderful dialogues, unmotivated episode happy endings would prove the Hollywood rule in this case and not the unforgettable exception.
  • Christina Krisch wrote in the Kronen Zeitung on February 12, 2009 that the film was a routine staged relationship thump, which could score with an attractive star cast, but was a bit bogus in the individual escapades and lacked the English pun in the German version.
