action

In 1979, in the fictional small town of Lillian, Ohio , a group of teenagers were shooting a zombie detective film with a Super 8 camera. While shooting a scene at the train station at night, they witness a train crash. A passing train derailed when a pickup truck drives onto the tracks and collides with the train. The teenagers barely escape the disaster. The driver of the pickup turns out to be Dr. Woodward, the local middle school biology teacher, who survived badly injured. He warns the children not to tell anything about their presence in the accident and to leave the scene immediately. When leaving the scene of the accident, they take the film with them from the overturned camera that filmed the course of the accident. Joe also takes one of the countless metal cubes lying at the scene of the accident.

While waiting for the film to develop, the teenagers discover that the train belonged to the US Air Force . The military cordoned off the scene of the accident and collected the scattered metal cubes. They're also combing the city without the residents realizing what they're looking for. After the accident, strange things happen in town. All the dogs are fleeing the city, numerous electrical components from power poles, alternators and motors, as well as other devices, are disappearing. Joe's metal cube develops a life of its own and suddenly becomes self-employed, breaks through a house wall and is attracted to the local water tower. Eventually people also disappear, in addition to the sheriff of the city also Alice, who played the female lead in the teenage film and with whom Joe fell in love during the filming. Joe's father, who is the deputy sheriff of the city, tries to clear up the mysterious events in the absence of the missing sheriff.

The military staged a wildfire and evacuated the city under this pretext. The teenagers discover on the developed Super 8 film that a gigantic creature climbed out of the train during the train crash. In search of their friend Alice, they drive back to school in the evacuated city to find out something about their biology teacher. Until 1963 he had participated in military research by the Air Force on an extraterrestrial being who apparently wanted to flee from Earth. Because of the experiments carried out on it, it has now developed a hatred of people. Dr. Woodward came into contact with the being during the research and thereby recognized the being's peaceful intention. Apparently, Dr. With the train wreck, Woodward will allow the creature to escape from the military train and return home. After this knowledge, the boys are arrested by the military for unauthorized re-entering the city and transported away in a military bus. On the drive out of town, the military bus is attacked by the creature, but the teenagers are barely able to escape while the soldiers on the bus are killed.

The teenagers return to the military-occupied city again. They want to look for the alien creature and their friend Alice in the cemetery, because Joe saw the creature digging there two nights earlier. The city of Lillian is now a huge battlefield. The Air Force has taken control of the city and wants to take all possible means against the creature. The weapons used, however, are spiraling out of control. In the town's cemetery, Cary and Joe discover a deep cavity beneath a garage. Here they find the unconscious Alice, who like many others was put into a kind of coma by the creature. They realize that the alien built a machine out of the missing metal objects.

After an explosive diversion, Cary and Joe are able to wake Alice up and free her. Together with two prisoners who have now awakened again, they want to escape from the cave system under the cemetery. That doesn't work. The creature chases them and drives them to a dead end. Only when Joe talks to her and explains to her that he is not against her does the creature let go of them. You are not killed by the being as expected.

Then the machine designed by the creature starts up. All metal objects, including the metal cubes, are drawn to the water tower connected to the magnet as if by a giant electromagnet . The machine puts the metal cubes together to form a spaceship and with this the creature leaves the earth.

The finished Super 8 film of the teenagers is shown in the credits. The scene they shot immediately before the train crash was also taken over.

production

Abrams and Spielberg worked together on the plot of the film. At first it was reported that Super 8 was either a sequel or a prequel to the movie Cloverfield , but Abrams quickly denied this. Filming began in autumn 2010. A first teaser was shot independently in April of the same year. It was the first collaboration between Abrams, Amblin Entertainment , Bad Robot Productions and Paramount Pictures , and the film was shot in Weirton , West Virginia from September to October 2010.

With production costs of around 50 million US dollars, around 260 million US dollars were earned worldwide. It raised $ 12.2 million on the opening weekend and a total of $ 127 million in the US. Outside the United States, it grossed about $ 133 million.

Publication and reviews

The film premiered in Australia , Hong Kong , Singapore , Thailand and Ukraine on June 9, 2011, and premiered in the United States one day later.

Of over 260 evaluated reviews of the Rotten Tomatoes review collection , the film received 82% positive ratings with an average of 7.4 out of 10 points.

Jamie Graham of the British magazine Total Film gave the film five stars: “Like Spielberg, Abrams has an eye for awe, his skilful arrangement of indelible images - a tank rolling through a children's playground, a central action landmark, framed in the distance by a narrow hole in a bedroom wall - mark him as a born storyteller ”. Richard Corliss from Time magazine wrote a similarly positive review, calling it “the most exciting, compassionate mainstream film of the year.” Ulrike Schröder from Cinema magazine gave the film the top grade and described it as a “modern classic”. It reminds me of Spielberg films like ' ET - The Extra Terrestrial ', is highly exciting and relies on wit and horror effects.

"A loving, also autobiographical homage to the genre cinema of the late 1970s and 1980s, which impresses with its careful design and breaks a lance for a cinema that finds a balance between eye-catching spectacle and emotionally moving narrative."

“Perhaps with so much retro bliss it is only logical that 'Super 8' is a thriller that lacks the thrill, the tension, to a large extent - it wants to caress the minds, not shake them up. In addition, Abrams' strength, which has become a trademark in series such as' Lost 'and films such as' Cloverfield', of exhausting mysteries to the point of failure, does not come into play here. All too well he follows the law of the alien film genre, according to which the monster has to be exposed and shown in the end. How terrific 'Super 8' would have been if Abrams had dared to trust his own voice more on this point. "

The German-language free TV premiere of the film took place on August 24, 2013 at 8:15 pm on ORF eins and Sat.1 .
