Jeffrey Jacob "J. J. “Abrams (born June 27, 1966 in New York City , New York , USA ) is an American film and television producer , screenwriter , composer , actor and director . He is also the co-founder and CEO of Bad Robot Productions .

Life

Abrams was born in New York City but grew up in Los Angeles . He attended Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville , New York.

He has worked on many film and television projects - including Armageddon - and is the creator of the very successful US television series Felicity (1998), Alias ​​- The Agent (2001) and Fringe - Borderline cases of the FBI (2008), the latter together with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci . He was also instrumental in the creative development process of Lost (2004).

His first film directing was the third installment in the Mission Impossible film series , which was released in May 2006. He got the job after his assistant gave actor Tom Cruise the DVDs of his Alias series , which he liked straight away. This was followed by the monster film Cloverfield (2008), which Abrams produced. In January 2013, Disney announced that Abrams would direct the seventh part of the Star Wars franchise - Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Filming began in May 2014 at Pinewood Studios, London . The premiere took place in December 2015. With a worldwide box office of over two billion US dollars, the film advanced to become the third most successful film to date . Abrams also directed the third and final episode of the final Star Wars trilogy ( Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ) after Disney sacked the original director Colin Trevorrow . The film opened in theaters in December 2019.

Abrams is the son of television producer Gerald W. Abrams and producer Carol Abrams . He and his wife Katie McGrath have three children.
