action

The College -Student Lewis Thomas holidays and learns of his secret childhood sweetheart Venna that this has made with her boyfriend circuit. He spontaneously decides to pick her up and take her to their common home in New Jersey . On the way he learns from his mother that his brother Fuller is in jail in Salt Lake City . Since he has not seen his brother for over five years, he decides to take a detour and pick him up on time for his release. Before they arrive at Venna, the brothers make fun of the truck driver "Rusty Nail" via CB radio . They trick him into thinking one of them is a beautiful woman and arrange to meet him in a motel room. In this room, next door to her, currently lives a bad-tempered racist businessman with whom Fuller had an argument when he checked in.

The next day they are told that their neighbor is now in a coma after being dragged behind a truck on the highway and having his jaw ripped out. After a police interrogation, the brothers fled on the orders of the sheriffs. But “Rusty Nail” stays on their heels and hunts them down. In a wild chase, the truck driver cornered her, but ultimately lets her go and disappears. The two decide not to tell Venna about the incident. But shortly after they met with her, "Rusty Nail" reports again via CB radio and tells them that he has Venna's college girlfriend under his control. From now on, the three do what “Rusty Nail” tells them to do. He never misses an opportunity to humiliate the brothers; For example, in one scene they have to order twelve cheeseburgers naked . After a skillful deception on his part, "Rusty Nail" succeeds in bringing Venna under his control.

"Rusty Nail" finally orders the brothers to a motel room, where he holds Venna prisoner. Meanwhile, Venna's college friend is being held in his truck by him. After a showdown, the four young people barely get away with their lives. "Rusty Nail" fakes his death by letting his truck speed into the motel with the corpse of another truck driver at the wheel. At the end of the film, the three young people hear "Rusty Nail" on the CB radio again over the radio of an ambulance. This escaped the police and is still on the highways of the USA.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films called the film a "[s] excitingly staged road movie with sympathetic main characters that plays virtuously with echoes of teenage horror films and at the same time perfectly captures the seclusion of the American provinces". Cinema said that director John Dahl, who is "otherwise known for stylish film noir homages like Red Rock West ", amazes "here with a smart minimalist shocker who wants nothing more than to pump adrenaline". Furthermore, this "sweaty chase [...] is a real test for fingernail chewers - hard, fast and nasty!"

The editorial staff of Cineclub wrote that the thriller was average, but that the actors were engaged.

Jessica Winter praised the portrayal of Steve Zahn in the October 2001 Village Voice . The thriller was inspired by the Hitchcock films, Taxi Driver and Christine . Many critics say the film is very reminiscent of Duel , one of Steven Spielberg's first films .
