action

Former soldier Mike Williams travels the United States in search of work. He comes to a town in Wyoming where Wayne Brown thinks he is the hit man Lyle, who has been expected for a week and is supposed to kill Brown's wife. Brown, the bar owner and - as Mike only learns later - is also the sheriff of the place, handed Williams half of the agreed payment of $ 10,000.

Mike then visits Wayne's ranch and meets his wife Suzanne. However, instead of carrying out the assignment, Mike informs them of the reason for his coming. Suzanne then offers him double the amount if he kills her husband. Mike likes the woman and accepts her money, he writes a letter to the sheriff that Wayne and his wife want to kill each other, and drives out of town. In the pouring rain he accidentally runs over the young farm worker Kurt, whom he had recently observed on Suzanne's and Wayne's ranch. He brings him back to Red Rock to the hospital, where two bullets are removed from him. Several local police officers appear, with Wayne now turning out to be the sheriff - he arrests Mike on flimsy grounds because he now knows that Mike did not carry out the assignment.

While driving in the sheriff's car, Wayne lets Mike run in order to shoot him "while trying to escape". Mike escapes though; On his escape, Lyle, who happened to drive by, helps him, the real hit man who has meanwhile arrived in the area, finds Mike sympathetic and makes friends with him; they discover that they served in the same army unit. Lyle drives him back to Red Rock to have a beer with him in Wayne's bar and "still do something" as he puts it. When Mike goes to the bathroom to avoid reuniting with Wayne, who has since arrived, Lyle learns from Mike about Mike's involvement as a fake killer. Wayne and Lyle follow Mike around the house, but Mike escapes while lying on the roof of a truck. Wayne then orders Lyle to pursue Mike; the next day he would compensate him in the office with an "extra charge". Meanwhile, Mike visits Suzanne to warn her of Lyle's appearance, who will soon appear at the house. The two manage to overpower Lyle and flee the ranch.

Suzanne and Mike spend the night in a hotel; Suzanne persuades Mike to go to Mexico with her, but first to get her family's due money from the safe in Wayne's sheriff's office. But you will only find a small part of the money there. When Wayne suddenly shows up, they flee into a closet. You overhear the two deputies appear in the office and present a wanted poster found on Kurt: Suzanne and Wayne are in truth the fraud couple Ann and Kevin McCord, who embezzled 1.9 million dollars in Illinois . The deputies also found Mike's letter in the mailbox and are now arresting Wayne for inciting murder. Lyle, who was also hiding in the office and overheard the conversations between Suzanne / Ann and Mike, captured the two of them and forced them to drive with him at gunpoint. He brings Wayne out of the small local jail after he lured Wayne's colleagues to a fire he started and shot the guard who stayed behind. With an agreement to do half and half , he forces Wayne to lead him to hiding the money in a nearby cemetery.

There is a showdown of the four protagonists; Lyle incapacitates Wayne who was trying to outsmart him with a knife throw. The tied up Suzanne manages to free herself and shoot Lyle. Mike and Suzanne flee with the money from the approaching police on a passing freight train. There Suzanne wants to force Mike to leave the train at gunpoint. She admits to having shot at Kurt, who found out about her and tried to blackmail her. Mike, however, reaches for the money bag - when Suzanne tries to shoot, no shot goes off. Lyle had removed the magazine before placing the gun on the floor at Wayne's prompt. Mike pours the money out of the moving train and pushes Suzanne behind. The headlights of a police car appear behind her, and Mike escapes by train.
