action

Against the background of an energy crisis that is worsening worldwide and is now threatening humanity, an experiment with a hadron particle accelerator on board an international space station should be the key to the energy supply of the future. But an incident occurs and suddenly the earth seems to have disappeared. Instead, the mysterious Jensen appears, and mysterious incidents also occur. As it turns out, the space station has landed in an alternate reality and is now on the other side of the sun. While the madness takes hold of some of the crew, the rest of them try to find their way home. Jensen wins Ava Hamilton's trust and convinces her to take a capsule to fly to alternate earth where her family is still alive. Meanwhile, she does everything possible to dissuade the other crew members from returning home, because the space station in her world has been destroyed by the dimensional transition and the earth is on the verge of collapse due to the lack of energy. At the last moment Ava decides to return with her team. She overwhelms Jensen and together with Schmidt she actually manages to take the leap in the other direction. But the earth that awaits them is no longer the same, for in their absence huge monsters of unknown origin have appeared there.

production

The project was first announced in 2012 under the working title God Particle (English for "God Particle"), although the closure of the Paramount label InSurge endangered the release of the film. The first clues that the film was linked to Cloverfield surfaced when part of the viral marketing for 10 Cloverfield Lane included a sound clip allegedly from the International Space Station .

On March 29, 2016, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Oyelowo were confirmed as actors. On April 12, 2016, Variety reported that John Krasinski was under discussion for a role as an astronaut, but his cast was still unclear due to his engagement on a TV series. On May 5, 2016, Elizabeth Debicki was cast in the role of an astronaut, followed by Daniel Brühl on May 10, 2016 . Chris O'Dowd and Zhang Ziyi were cast on May 26, 2016, one day later, on May 27, 2016, John Ortiz and Aksel Hennie joined them. Dan Mindel was hired as cameraman .

Filming began on June 10, 2016. JJ Abrams did some post-shots .

publication

The theatrical release of The Cloverfield Paradox was originally scheduled for February 24, 2017, but was first postponed to October 27, 2017 in late 2016 to allow more time for post-production. At the end of July 2017, the publication was postponed again to February 2, 2018. At the beginning of January 2018, the production company Paramount Pictures postponed the theatrical release to April 20 and initially only called the film Untitled Cloverfield Movie . A little later it was announced that the video-on-demand provider Netflix was in talks to take over the film. The service released the film following Super Bowl LII on February 4, 2018, in German-speaking countries after Central European time on February 5, 2018. Netflix only advertised the film with a trailer during the Super Bowl about two hours earlier.
