The Cloverfield Paradox

10 Cloverfield Lane is an American movie director Dan Trachtenberg from the year 2016 . Mary Elizabeth Winstead , John Goodman and John Gallagher can be seen in the leading roles . The film premiered on March 8, 2016 in New York City and was released in American cinemas on March 11, 2016, and was shown in German-speaking countries from March 31, 2016.

The film is commercially conceived as a sequel of the disaster film Cloverfield, also produced by JJ Abrams , from 2008, but has nothing to do with the previous film in terms of design, personnel and plot. The only point of connection in terms of content is the extraterrestrial invasion briefly discussed at the end .

action

Michelle, who has broken up with boyfriend Ben, leaves her New Orleans apartment and drives through rural Louisiana . While driving, she hears about large-scale power outages on the radio. She is distracted by calls from Ben on her cell phone. When she comes across a vehicle, she loses control of her car and overturns in a field.

Michelle wakes up with an IV drip on her arm and a bandaged leg chained to a mattress in an empty cell. She soon greets Howard, an armed, corpulent man, middle-aged, and tells her he saved her after her accident. While she is recovering from her injuries, she gets to know his very well-equipped underground bunker complex, which, according to Howard's account, she will probably not be able to leave for years due to an atomic, bacterial or chemical attack that has poisoned the outside atmosphere. The bunker is also home to Emmett, a young man Michelle's age who helped Howard build the facility. He says Howard is a retired satellite technician and has been plotting conspiracy theories for many years . However, Emmett claims to have witnessed the catastrophic attack himself and saved himself at the last minute in Howard's bunker.

Michelle doesn't believe this story and thinks Howard is an insane kidnapper. To convince her, he shows her through the door window two dead pigs that are lying in front of the bunker and supposedly perished in the poisonous atmosphere. Michelle also sees Howard's car, which shows signs of an accident. She realizes that Howard pushed her off the street and caused her car accident.

Michelle looks for an opportunity to escape from the bunker. Over dinner, she can distract Howard and take his keys. Followed by Howard, she tries to open the outer door when a car appears on the other side of the door window and a terribly disfigured woman appears pleading for entry. Howard warns Michelle not to open the door. Michelle listens to him and now increasingly believes his stories. Howard also confesses to her that he actually caused her car accident because he was panicking about the attack that was about to begin. The doomed woman at the door was Leslie, a neighbor who knew of the existence of his bunker.

The coexistence of the three in the bunker now seems to be harmonious. They watch videos, listen to music on an old jukebox , read, do puzzles and talk about their life plans. Michelle becomes increasingly friends with Emmett. Howard enjoys cooking and being jovial, but also has bossy and jealous moments. He shows Michelle a photo of his daughter Megan, who lives with her mother in Chicago. Michelle tells him that she wanted to become a fashion designer and that she can tailor.

One day mysterious helicopters can be heard over the bunker, causing earthquake-like vibrations. Michelle has to carry out a repair of the ventilation system that is necessary because only she, as the petite of the three, can climb through the narrow ventilation shaft. At the end of the shaft it enters a chamber with a second bunker exit. At the window she finds traces of blood and a cry for help carved on the inside. She also finds a pair of earrings that she recognizes as the ones Howard's alleged daughter is wearing in the photo. In an interview with Emmett, the terrible suspicion is confirmed. Emmett knows the girl in the photo, who is not Howard's daughter, but a schoolmate who disappeared a few years ago. In another picture she can be seen together with Howard in the bunker.

Michelle and Emmett decide to leave the bunker and seek help. In order to protect herself from the allegedly toxic atmosphere, Michelle tailors a kind of protective suit out of a bathing curtain that has been secretly stolen. Meanwhile, Emmett is supposed to get Howard's gun. When Howard discovers part of the preparations, Emmett takes the blame and declares as an alleged motive that he was interested in Michelle. Howard then shoots him in cold blood and dissolves Emmett's body in a barrel of perchloric acid . He explains to Michelle that from now on they will have a life for two.

Michelle is able to turn Howard off with an attack with the acid and flee with her protective suit through the ventilation shaft from the bunker, which catches fire and explodes shortly afterwards. Outside everything seems completely normal at first. Michelle sees a flock of migratory birds in the sky and realizes that the air is not poisonous at all. However, a strange UFO appears on the horizon. Michelle hides in a shed, where she finds Leslie's body and takes her car keys. Lured by the explosion of the bunker, the aliens come closer and attack them. She takes refuge in Howard's pickup, but a huge alien grabs the vehicle and leads it to its throat. With her presence of mind, Michelle can quickly build a Molotov cocktail from a whiskey bottle lying around in the car and throw it into the monster's mouth, which then catches fire and drops the car.

In the meantime it has got dark. Michelle gets into Leslie's car, leaves the property at 10 Cloverfield Lane , where Howard's house was, and returns to the highway. On the radio she hears that parts of the south coast have been recaptured. Survivors are supposed to head north to get to safety. However, people with combat experience or medical knowledge are asked to come to Houston and support the resistance. Michelle stops at a road sign, thinks about it for a moment, and then decides to head to Houston instead of going north to Baton Rouge . In the last camera shot, the outlines of a spaceship are visible in the thunderstorm light above the road to Houston.

The plot of the thriller with a few actors is often compared to a chamber play :

"10 CLOVERFIELD LANE is a claustrophobic, extremely exciting chamber game underground."

- Harald Ladstätter

The Stuttgarter Zeitung called the film "a psychological thriller of maximum impact" and wrote:

“Always at eye level with the protagonist, the audience is drawn into a story that balances on unsteady ground and does not contain any certainties. Based on the atmosphere of fundamental distrust, Trachtenberg fans out a complex, intricate plot. The actors are as focused as the script is conceived. Above all, John Goodman is furious as a paranoid bunker patriarch who has the serenity of madness. "

- Stuttgart newspaper

Gross profit

According to Box Office Mojo, the film grossed 110,216,998 US dollars worldwide (as of June 2, 2016) on a budget of around 15,000,000 US dollars .

Offshoot

A spin-off of the film is the short film Megan by Greg Strasz from 2018, which revolves around the fate of Megan Paulson mentioned in the film. In the 8-minute strip, which tries to harmonize the storylines of the various Cloverfield films, Megan is apparently really Howard's daughter, unlike 10 Cloverfield Lane suggests.
