Karl-Heinz Urban (born June 7, 1972 in Wellington ) is a New Zealand actor .

biography

Karl Urban was born in Wellington. His father, a German émigré, owned a factory for leather goods. Urban attended St Mark's Church School in Wellington, where he showed an early enthusiasm for acting and also took part in school plays. At the age of eight he got his first role in the New Zealand television series Pioneer Woman .

After attending college , he wanted to move to Victoria University of Wellington , but instead starred in soap operas such as Shortland Street and in fantasy series such as Xena - The Warrior Princess and Hercules . In both, the audience remembered him in the recurring role of Cupid or Caesar.

Urban had his first supporting role in a Hollywood production in Ghost Ship in 2002 . In the same year he took on the role of Éomer of the Rohirrim horsemen in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers , as well as in the finale of the trilogy . The great success of Peter Jackson's fantasy epic finally opened the door to Hollywood for Urban.

Over the next few years, Urban appeared mainly in international film productions. He got the role of the unscrupulous hit man Kiril in The Bourne Conspiracy and impersonated the Macbeth- based character of Vaako in the science fiction film Riddick: Chronicles of a Warrior .

In 2005, Urban starred alongside Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Rosamund Pike in the film adaptation of the first-person shooter Doom . In 2007 he played the lead role of the young warrior The Spirit in Pathfinder .

In the new Star Trek films he has played Dr. Leonard "pill" McCoy . In 2012, he was in the British sci-fi flick Dredd the titular Judge Dredd . He also had a cameo as a stormtrooper in the 2019 film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker .

During the shooting of the television film The Privateers (2000) Urban met his future wife Natalie Wihongi, who worked as a make-up artist on the film. They married on September 16, 2004, and announced their separation in June 2014. Both lived with their two sons in Auckland , New Zealand .
