Riddick (reference Title: Riddick - survival is his revenge ) is a science fiction - action film by director David Twohy from the year 2013 with Vin Diesel in the lead role. After Riddick: Warriors of Darkness (2004, short film) and Riddick: Chronicles of a Warrior (2004, movie), this is the second sequel to Pitch Black - Planet of Darkness, which was released in 2000 . The work forms the third feature film in the Riddick franchise. The film opened in German cinemas on September 19, 2013.
action
Five years after the plot of Riddick: A Warrior's Chronicles , Richard B. Riddick is betrayed by his own people and abandoned by Vaako's assistant Krone on an inhospitable planet.
Seriously injured, he must first save himself in a desert-like environment from the local fauna, vulture-like scavengers, hyena- or jackal-like animals and very dangerous, poisonous, scorpion-like animals ( mud demons ). After recovering from his injuries, he raises a hyena-like native and immunizes himself against the poison of the mud demons . After a fight against a large mud demon , it reaches a savannah-like landscape through a gorge and can thus survive relatively easily. Due to a series of attractive thunderstorms that turn the safe environment into a life-threatening area in which numerous mud demons who need to keep their skin moist can live, Riddick decides to activate a distress signal in an abandoned mercenary station that reveals its identity and presence on the planet. Soon a ship of bounty hunters under the leadership of the unscrupulous Santana lands , followed shortly after by another ship under the command of the levelheaded John. Santana wants Riddick dead, John's catch him alive. The latter, father of the bounty hunter William J. Johns, who died in the Pitch Black film, wants to learn from Riddick how and why his son died.
After Riddick was able to neutralize some bounty hunters and also steal an energy cell each that the spaceships need to start, he can first win the unequal fight. The mercenaries do not comply with his central demand to leave the planet in one ship and hand over the second.
After an approaching thunderstorm forces both groups to work together, Riddick and Johns try to bring the hidden energy cells back to the ships. Riddick, seriously injured, seems to be left behind by Johns. In a final battle in which Riddick can kill numerous mud demons , he is saved by Johns with a reactivated spaceship.
Then both groups go their separate ways, the few survivors in one, Riddick in the other spaceship.
Extended cut version
A scene has been added to the long version that gives the ending a new twist. It shows the Lord Marshal (crown) of the Necromonger in a praying posture. A look out of the window of his spaceship cabin suggests that the fleet is on the edge of the Necromongian paradise “Underverse”. Riddick steps into the room, holds a knife to the neck of the kneeling Lord Marshal and asks him to reveal whether Vaako is still alive. When the Lord Marshal utters only religious phrases again, Riddick stabs him to death. He now turns to the servant with the same question. She replies that Vaako is both alive and dead. With that the film ends.
background
Due to the financial failure of the predecessor, which was only able to recoup its production costs through the sale of the DVD, it looked for a long time as if there would be no sequel. The two successful video game releases The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena , which were positively received by critics and fans, made a direct sequel realistic again.
In contrast to its two predecessors, this Riddick work is not based on the previously responsible major studio , Universal Pictures , so that director David Twohy and the producers, to which Vin Diesel himself belongs, worked independently. A positive aspect was being able to work artistically more freely. In order to support the filming financially, co-producer Vin Diesel had his own house loaned, thereby underscoring his statement that the project is an affair of the heart.
The cost of production was $ 38 million. The film grossed around $ 98 million worldwide, including $ 42 million in the United States.
criticism
Riddick received average to positive reception from US critics. Around 60 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes reviews rate the film positively. The website comes to the following conclusion: "It may not gain new facets from the franchise, but this return-to-the-roots brings the fans more heavy-blooded [brooding] science fiction than was expected."
"Despite a sag in the second third and slight deductions in the special effects B-grade, in the end it can be said with a clear conscience: Riddick rocks!"
“Of course it's fantastic to see Riddick back on screen, but one pitch Black was enough. Twohy copied a lot from the first part and thus he made the action thriller a predictable film. Diesel is instantly in his role, just like the other actors, nonetheless, a lot seems cheap and imitation. The computer effects also seem unreal, even if some tricks are convincing. A solid sequel, but hopefully not the last part. "
“If you've had enough of the high-gloss technology of conventional blockbusters, you 've come to the right place with Riddick . Everything here is heartily old-fashioned, the characters as well as the special effects technology. Sometimes you feel like you've been transported back to one of these space operas from the 1960s. No wonder: cameraman David Eggby shot the first Mad Max film. "
