The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a first person shooter that tells the prehistory of the films Pitch Black and Riddick: Chronicles of a Warrior starring Vin Diesel .

The game was developed by the development studio Starbreeze Studios in collaboration with Vin Diesel's self-founded entertainment company Tigon Studios . Vivendi Universal Games released it for Xbox at the same time as the cinema release in June 2004 . A PC version followed in December of the same year.

action

The player takes on the role of the felon Richard B. Riddick, who is portrayed in the movies by Vin Diesel and is also spoken by him in the video game. After he ended up in the dark and brutal prison Butcher Bay for his crimes, it is now up to the player to escape from this asylum. He has to make use of Riddicks' very special skills shown in the films, e.g. B. His supernatural view. The mood in Butcher Bay is generally based on the American provincial prisons of the 1980s: There is a cruel pecking order in the futuristic bulwark; Gangs band together, prisoners kill each other while on watch, and the like. Especially at the beginning, the player has to work his way through the merciless hierarchy of convicted murderers and political prisoners.

background

Vin Diesel took part in the game's development as executive producer. He also gave the main character his distinctive voice, which is why the German version was not re-dubbed, but only provided with German subtitles. Other well-known speakers are Dwight Schultz ( Das A-Team , Star Trek ) as prison guard Hoxie, rapper Xzibit as Wächter Abott, Cole Hauser ( Pitch Black - Planet of Darkness , 2 Fast 2 Furious ) as Johns and Ron Perlman ( Hellboy ) as Jagger Valance in the mines. In addition, the speakers are also embodied in the game itself. Vin Diesel and Xzibit being the most noticeable. Ron Perlman, on the other hand, wears sunglasses and a beard. Cole Hauser also embodies John's bounty hunter in the movie Pitch Black.

The soundtrack of the game was composed by Gustaf Grefberg and Johan Althoff and recorded by Grefberg. Three weeks after the game was released, publisher Vivendi Universal Games put the soundtrack and four exclusive pieces online for free download. The soundtrack was named "Soundtrack of the Year 2004" by the editors of the game magazine GameStar shortly afterwards .

Critics praised Escape from Butcher Bay as a major exception among the otherwise poor quality games based on movies. In 2005 the game won an MTV Movie Award in the “Best Computer Game Based on a Movie” category. The game received very good reviews in the German trade press. The Gamestar awarded 90 points and the PC Games 86%. On the 4players website , the score is 90.

continuation

The follow-up project The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena , abandoned by Vivendi Universal Games , was taken over by Atari . The game was originally conceived as a reprint of the first part; Atari announced that the title would also contain separate content and a multiplayer mode. The title was released in spring 2009 for PC ( Windows ), Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 .
