The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is a first-person shooter that tells the prehistory of the films Pitch Black and Riddick: Chronicles of a Warrior starring Vin Diesel . At the same time, it is the successor to The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay , which is also included as a remake in the game.
The follow-up project abandoned by Vivendi Universal Games was taken over by Atari . The game was originally conceived as a reprint of the first part; Atari announced that the title would also contain separate content and a multiplayer mode. The title was released on April 23, 2009 for PC ( Windows ), Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 . A Mac OS X version followed a year later, on April 16, 2010.
The game was developed by the development studio Starbreeze Studios in collaboration with Vin Diesel's self-founded entertainment company Tigon Studios .

The player takes on the role of the felon Richard B. Riddick, who is portrayed in the movies by Vin Diesel and is spoken of in the video game.
The game continues the storyline of its predecessor Escape from Butcher Bay . Johns, who took Riddick to Butcher Bay Prison, helps him escape. They escape on a ship, where they go into a deep cryogenic sleep. However, the ship is seized by the "Dark Athena" under the leadership of Captain Gail Revas (voiced by Michelle Forbes ). Riddick escapes capture and must fight the crew, which consists of cybernetic soldiers. Ultimately, Riddick escapes with an escape pod , but crashes on a planet where Reva's people are in charge. So he decides to get back on the "Dark Athena" to get rid of Revas for good.
In the end he kills Revas and flees from the "Dark Athena" with the child Lynn, whose parents were made slaves by Revas. Johns is probably there too.

Vin Diesel took part in the game's development as executive producer. He also gave the main character his distinctive voice, which is why the German version was not re-dubbed, but only provided with German subtitles. The same was true for the predecessor. The game also includes a technically upgraded version of the predecessor Escape from Butcher Bay , which is based on the technology of Assault on Dark Athena .

Critics praised the English voice actors, the background story and the believable characters. However, the monotonous level design and the hardly existing differences to the predecessor were criticized.
