A Perfect Getaway ( German A perfect trip ) is an American thriller from David Twohy from the year of 2009.
action
Cliff and Cydney Anderson are newly married and are spending their honeymoon in Hawaii . The two want to hike to a remote beach on the neighboring island of Kaua'i . On the drive to the famous Kalalau hiking trail, they meet the young couple Kale and Cleo. They ask the Andersons to take them with them by car. However, when Kale notices that Cliff wants to get rid of her, he is freaked out and does not want to ride anymore. He pulls Cleo out of the car. Cliff and Cydney go on alone.
The Andersons begin the hike and shortly afterwards meet Nick, who is on the way to his girlfriend Gina. The two accompany Nick for a while. They learn from a group of other hikers that a double murder of a newly married couple has been committed in Honolulu . A man and a woman are suspected. While Cliff and Cydney are obviously troubled by the news, Nick appears to be staying cool and moving on unconcerned. Cliff and Cydney follow him and meet his girlfriend Gina at a waterfall. The young people start talking while Cliff tries to find out more about the murder from a higher position using his cell phone. Just as he has downloaded the message that the murderous couple is suspected to be on Kaua'i, and he is preparing to download the suspect's pictures to his cell phone, he is disturbed by Kale and Cleo, the young couple with whom there was a difference. Kale's still upset and harassing Cliff. Nick, who joins them, walks between them and can defuse the situation.
After that, the Andersons set off again with Nick and Gina to visit the remote beach. While they are talking, they learn a lot from each other. For example, Nick had a metal plate implanted in his head after being wounded in Iraq . His girlfriend Gina used to be a saleswoman in a butcher shop. Cliff expresses a suspicion to Cydney that the bizarre couple may be involved in the murders. This assumption is reinforced when Nick goes hunting with a bow and arrow and offers them a killed animal for dinner. While the men are on the hunt, Cydney and Gina exchange ideas. Cydney told Gina the story of a friend from before who was crazy. Rocky, that's his name, hung his neighbor's Labrador from a tree with a silk stocking. He asked her not to tell the story to anyone, otherwise it would have dire consequences. When Gina asks if she kept it, Cydney says, yes, until today.
The next morning they are woken up by the noise of a police helicopter that lands on a meadow not far from them. The two couples are amazed to learn that the police have arrested Kale and Cleo. An officer finds a box with teeth in the two of them rucksack, which can be interpreted as suspected evidence of a crime. It remains unclear whether they actually come from the murdered couple. The four of them are happy that the killers have been caught and continue to relax on the beach. Once there, Cliff and Nick paddle out to sea. While Cydney prepares food, Gina looks at the images stored on Cliff's camcorder . All of a sudden Gina drops the camera in horror, jumps up and runs away, because through some pictures she suddenly realized that the Andersons must be the murderers. Gina desperately tries to warn her friend of the deadly danger. However, Cydney has started her pursuit. Meanwhile, Cliff and Nick have arrived in a coastal cave. There Cliff shows his true colors and shoots Nick in the back of the head. The well-trained man falls from the kayak into the water.
Some flashbacks explain how Cliff and Cydney became aware of Nick and Gina. It also becomes a certainty that Cliff is the same Rocky from when you saw Cliff and Cydney smoking crystal meth . Under the influence of drugs, Cydney supported him in his deeds.
Meanwhile, Gina was caught up with Cydney. A fight ensues between the two, with Cydney falling from a cliff into the sea. Gina sees Nick's abandoned kayak in the cave. Suddenly her cell phone rings, her cell phone provider is on it, and she desperately asks to send help. From the cliff, Gina sees Cydney lying on a kayak. Suddenly Cliff appears in front of her, who has almost climbed the cliff. She pierces his left hand with a knife and runs away. Cliff can, however, climb the cliff and pull the knife out of his wound. Then he follows Gina. Meanwhile, Cydney paddles back to the beach, where the police helicopter is already waiting. She pretends to be a victim. Meanwhile, Nick survived in the bubble of the overturned kayak when the bullet from Cliff's pistol was stopped by the metal plate implanted in Nick's head after a mine explosion during a military mission in Iraq.
The fleeing Gina runs into a group of young men who are looking for their stolen kayaks from Nick and Cliff. Cliff arrives and tries to explain to the men that the completely angry and screaming Gina is under the influence of the synthetic drug crystal meth . However, one of the men notices that Cliff's pupils are greatly enlarged, but Gina's not. When Cliff realizes that the men don't trust his words, he draws his gun and shoots one by one. Gina runs away in horror. Shortly thereafter, Nick - who has freed himself from the kayak and started looking for Gina - reaches the cliff on the beach, where Cliff has just shot the young men. He involved Cliff in a fight and injured him with the knife in his right hand so badly that he could no longer control the handgun in a controlled manner. Eventually he overpowers Cliff and holds him in check with his pistol. The police helicopter appears above the two of them, from which the scene is being observed. It also contains Cydney, who is supposed to show the emergency services the killer. Cydney chooses Nick as a target, but as Gina between Nick and Cliff resp. Rocky leaves, it becomes clear that he is not the one we are looking for. Gina stops Nick from killing Cliff and instead kicks him to the ground in disdain. When Gina and Nick embrace, the cliff lying on the ground tries to grab the gun. Cydney points out to the police sniper in the helicopter that the cliff lying on the ground is the dangerous killer. She hopes to get out of the dependency on Cliff resp. Free Rocky by breaking with the past. Cliff is then fatally hit by a targeted shot by the sniper from the helicopter.
In the helicopter on the way to the clinic, Nick proposes to Gina. However, neither of them want to know about a honeymoon.

criticism
"Carefully developed, well-staged psychological thriller that undermines the genre specifications by turning the hunter into the hunted."
“An exotic setting as the setting for a perfidious game of cat and mouse is not exactly new. The thriller death silence and the tear turistas already combined the beautiful with the deadly. Now director David Twohy ( Pitch Black ) follows this motto and staged a pretty to look at, sometimes even really exciting shocker [...] A little more speed would not have harmed the grueling vacation trip at the beginning. Instead, he turns into a relentless struggle for survival in the last 15 minutes. Only why hackneyed narrative structures are used even by experienced filmmakers like David Twohy - a war injury introduced with a steam hammer later naturally becomes a lifesaver - remains a mystery. [...] Conclusion: Stylish shocker who knows how to captivate with punctual tension despite illogical moments. "
"Despite an interesting idea and a promising cast, David Twohy delivers a rather weak thriller with" A Perfect Getaway "."
