Jason Thomas Mraz [ 'dʒeɪsən ˈɱɹaz ] (born June 23, 1977 in Mechanicsville , Virginia ) is an American singer-songwriter and a two-time Grammy award winner. His style includes pop , rock , folk and funk / soul elements.

Career

Mraz began his career in the cafes of Virginia and New York in the late 1990s before moving to San Diego . There he joined the percussionist Toca Rivera . His first album, Waiting for My Rocket to Come , was released on Elektra Records in 2002 and was produced by John Alagía . In 2004 came the great success with the live CD / DVD Tonight, Not Again , which made it into the top 50 on the Billboard 200 . His second album, Mr. AZ , was released on Atlantic Records in 2005 and entered the charts at number 5.

In 2007 Mraz released the single The Beauty in Ugly , a piece he had previously written under the title Plain Jane and for the US telenovela Alles Betty! circumscribed. The song was used in one of the show's campaigns promoting self-confidence among women. He also released a Spanish song called La Nueva Belleza (The New Beauty) . Toca Rivera's brother, the Latin pop guitarist Carlos Olmeda , assisted him in writing the Spanish text.

On the US show American Idol , a candidate presented Geek in the Pink and helped the song and Mraz itself gain popularity in the US. The sales figures in the virtual music store iTunes skyrocketed and reached number 22 on March 10, 2007 in the US iTunes charts.

With the release I'm Yours from the album We Sing. We Dance. We steal things. Mraz was able to place itself high in the charts, especially in Europe . B. in Sweden and Norway even number one. Even if it did not land at the top of the charts in other countries, the song was an extremely long-lasting hit. In his home country the song reached number 6 and with 76 weeks of charting between May 2008 and November 2009 it was one of the songs that had been on the US Billboard Hot 100 the longest . Also in Great Britain , where it reached number 11, it is one of the most successful songs with 56 weeks in the top 75. The album was very successful internationally and in the charts in the USA, France and Switzerland for over a year. The long player also contains songs that were recorded with other famous artists such as Colbie Caillat and James Morrison . The album and song also earned Mraz three nominations for a Grammy Award in 2009 , including for Song of the Year.

Mraz did not win his first two Grammys until the following year, when he received awards for Make It Mine and for the duet Lucky (with Colbie Caillat) in the field of pop music.

The single Mr. Curiosity from the album Mr. AZ only officially entered the German charts in Germany in March 2010, influenced by Lena Meyer-Landrut , who shortly before played this song in the national preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 , our star for Oslo had presented.

On January 2, 2012, Mraz released a video of the song I Won't Give Up . The song reached number 1 on the American download charts. The fourth studio album Love Is a Four Letter Word was released on April 13, 2012 in Europe and on April 17, 2012 in the USA. The fifth studio album YES! was released on July 11, 2014. The sixth studio album Know was released on August 10, 2018.

In April 2020 he released the single Look for the Good .
