Rachael Yamagata was born on September 23, 1977 in Arlington , Virginia with her twin brother Benjamin. Her parents Barbara and Ben divorced just two years after their birth . Her mother was born in China, is of Italian-German descent and is an artist and painter; her father is a third-generation Japanese-born American and a lawyer with a degree from Harvard . Her mother moved to New York and her father to Washington, DC after the divorce , so Yamagata kept commuting between her parents' homes. music

Yamagata was the first time on stage for the Chicago-based funk band Bumpus, for which she later wrote and recorded the two albums Bumpus and Stereoscope . In 2001 she separated from both the band Bumpus and her boyfriend, who was also a member of the band. The musical direction Yamagata wanted to take no longer suited the style of Bumpus, so she decided to pursue a solo career. She had her first solo appearance in 2001 in the Viper Room in Los Angeles . She got her first recording contract with Arista Records in 2002, where she released an EP with five songs. Her debut album Happenstance , produced by John Alagia , was finally released in 2004. Several members of the band The Klezmatics took part in the song I Want You . Her songs have also been used in numerous television series, e.g. B. in OC, California , Nip / Tuck , Brothers & Sisters or Emergency Room , but also in movies like The Last Kiss , Elizabethtown , In My Sister's Shoes or One for 4 . Yamagata worked with Jason Mraz on his song Did You Get My Message? from the album Mr. AZ , which was released in 2005, and sang together with Rhett Miller the song Fireflies on his solo album The Believer . She was also involved in the songs Let It Ride , Cold Roses and Friends on the Ryan Adams album Cold Roses .

In 2015 the track "Saturday Morning" appeared on the compilation "IC Independent Celebration, Vol. 1" of the Hamburg label "Birdstone Records".
