action

The shy Lena, the cynical Tibby, the passionate Carmen and the sporty Bridget have been friends all their lives and consider each other to be sisters. When they were 16, they spent a summer apart for the first time: Lena visits her grandparents in Greece , Bridget takes part in a soccer camp in Mexico , Carmen spends the summer with her father, who lives apart from her mother, and Tibby stays at home. to work in a department store and make a documentary about the futility of life.

Shortly before the friends split up, Carmen discovers a pair of jeans in a shop that - despite their different shapes - miraculously fits all four girls. The friends are sure that jeans have special powers and bring good luck. They decide to send the pants back and forth between them all summer long.

For all four girls, this summer brings special experiences that will change their lives forever.

As soon as she arrived in Greece , Lena had a little accident and fell into the sea. When she got stuck under water with the "magical jeans" she was wearing and threatened to drown, she was rescued by the Greek student Kostos. It sparks immediately between Lena and Kostos, but Lena's grandparents forbid her to interact with Kostos because his grandfather and Lena's grandfather have been enemies for many years. But the two adolescents in love do not abide by the ban and meet in secret. When Lena's grandparents find out, they separate the young couple, but Lena can convince her grandfather that she really loves Kostos and is finally allowed to enter into a relationship with him.

Tibby is annoyed with her job in the department store, but the other frustrated employees at least offer her enough material for her documentation. Tibby's monotonous everyday life is interrupted when she finds an unconscious girl. A little later, the girl, 12-year-old Bailey, is standing in front of Tibby's door, because the jeans that Lena sent on to Tibby were accidentally left outside Bailey's front door. Bailey is enthusiastic about Tibby's documentary filming and makes herself Tibby's assistant. The cynical Tibby is initially annoyed by Bailey's cheerful nature and her honest interest in the people she interviewed for the documentary, but becomes friends with the girl more and more. When Bailey fails to show up for a meeting one day, Tibby drives to her home and learns that Bailey is in the hospital because she has leukemia and does not have long to live. This gives Tibby a new perspective on life and allows Bailey to teach her to appreciate the little things in life. Eventually Bailey dies, but before that, she reminds Tibby that the jeans actually have magical powers, as Bailey and Tibby got to know each other through them.

Carmen is overjoyed to spend the summer with her father Al, whom she has hardly seen since she was 10, but then she finds out that he is now engaged to a woman named Lydia who has two children of Carmen's age. Carmen feels left out. When she is humiliated because of her stocky figure while trying on the dresses for the bridesmaids before her father's wedding , she runs away and upon returning to her father's house finds that he is having dinner with his new family instead of after her search. Then she smashes the window with a stone in anger and drives back to her mother. Tibby, who has gained a new attitude towards life through Bailey, brings Carmen to no longer remain silent and to call her father to tell him everything that she was previously unable to say.

Bridget falls in love with Eric, who is three years her senior, at soccer camp. When she gets the jeans sent, she gains the necessary self-confidence and sleeps with Eric. But after that night Bridget feels strangely empty. She realizes that she only slept with Eric to prove to herself that she is not like her mother, who was manic-depressed and killed herself a few years ago. When she returns home, she is met by Tibby and Carmen, who convince Bridget that she is stronger than her mother. Finally, Eric comes to visit and Bridget and he decide to remain just friends for the time being.

After Tibby, Carmen and Bridget have picked up their friend Lena from the airport, they make their way to Carmen’s father’s wedding. Carmen receives the jeans from her friends in order to muster the necessary courage. When Al discovers his daughter among the guests, he interrupts the wedding ceremony to apologize to Carmen and bring her to the front, where she takes her place as bridesmaid .

"Atmospheric, clever self-discovery film for adolescent girls, a demanding, but never instructive teenage film off the beaten path."

- Video Week

Roger Ebert describes the film in the Chicago Sun-Times as "entertaining" and "warm-hearted"; the young actors as "talented".

The lexicon of international films judges the film to be a "thoughtful youth comedy". The production is characterized by a distance to the "clichés of the genre" and addresses "existential [...] questions". This would address issues such as “family feuds” and “latent racism”.
