action

Maggie Feller has to leave the house of her stepmother Sydelle and moves in with her sister Rose, who works as a lawyer. The sisters always argue, mostly because of Maggie's unsound lifestyle, but also over the shoes that Maggie often borrows from Rose. When Rose catches Maggie and Jim, her boss and lover, in bed together one day, she kicks Maggie out of the door.

Maggie goes to Florida to see her grandmother Ella Hirsch. She would like to receive $ 3,000 from her to go to New York City and start an acting career there. Instead, Ella finds her a job in a nursing home. At the same time, she promises to double the money Maggie makes with her own resources.

Meanwhile, Rose quits her job as a lawyer and works as a dog walker. She meets her former colleague Simon Stein, with whom she is meeting more and more frequently. The Gourmet Stein takes you to selected restaurants.

Maggie, who suffers from dyslexia, befriends a blind, bedridden literature professor to whom she reads. As a result, she learns to read without errors. She is deeply moved by a poem in which the friendship between two women is described. Ella tells her granddaughter Maggie about her mother who died from suicide in a car accident and who suffered from manic depression , and works to ensure that the sisters are reconciled.

After her engagement and a subsequent argument with Stein, Rose comes to Florida and makes up with Maggie. At Rose and Simon's wedding, Maggie recites another poem that moves her very much and expresses her feelings for her sister.

Reviews

The film received rather positive reviews, but some critics said the plot was not complex or cheesy.

James Berardinelli criticized the script on ReelViews , which he thought was more suitable for an episode of a sitcom like Golden Girls . He praised the portrayal of Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine as well as the "spoiled brat" of Cameron Diaz.

"In the end, there is nothing more in my sister's shoes than a conservative women's film that uses a well-humored ensemble exclusively to give its protagonists, who initially seemed to have a life on their own two feet, regardless of the constraints of the bourgeois family, at least in the realm of possibility, reassign the duties of mothers and wives. This means that the film may speak from the hearts of a large part of the audience, but social development is going in a different direction. "
