The Bedroom Window is a 1987 American thriller directed by Curtis Hanson, based on the book The Witnesses by writer Anne Holden .
action
Terry Lambert has an affair with Sylvia, his boss's wife. After a party, Sylvia visits Terry in his apartment and at night, looking out of the bedroom window, she witnesses the young girl Denise being attacked by an obvious rapist on the street. When he sees that Sylvia has been watching him, he lets go of his victim and escapes. Concerned that the affair could be exposed, Sylvia and Terry decide that Sylvia will not reveal herself as a witness and instead Terry will simply testify to the police that he had observed the crime. Terry then gives the police a description of the perpetrator, although he has not seen the perpetrator himself. When the perpetrator is arrested and charged, Terry has to testify in court. He is questioned by the defense attorney, becomes entangled in contradictions, and it turns out that because of his short-sightedness he could not have recognized the perpetrator on the dark sidewalk. Sylvia, who watches the process from the auditorium disguised in a headscarf and sunglasses, tries to help Terry with his testimony with gestures and hand movements. The accused becomes aware of her and recognizes her as the woman who saw him from the window. He is acquitted for lack of evidence.
During a theater performance, Sylvia, who has since ended her affair with Terry and confessed to her husband, is stabbed to death in an ambush by the same perpetrator; this escapes undetected. Due to a statement from Sylvia's husband, Terry is now suspected of the murder. After a young girl has finally been found murdered, Terry and Denise decide to look for the real culprit themselves and to set a trap for him. The perpetrator is apparently targeting young women who attract attention and arouse him because of their attractive appearance and extrovert demeanor. Denise agrees to act as "bait" and disguises herself accordingly so that she attracts his attention undetected. As planned, he follows her into an underground car park, where Terry ambushes him. They barely manage to overpower the perpetrator, who is then arrested.
One involuntarily associates the classic The Window to the Courtyard (1954) by Alfred Hitchcock , as the plot does indeed have some remarkable parallels. In contrast, however, the action here isn't limited to a backyard.
criticism
"Coherent, suspense-oriented thriller, staged with a sense of timing."
