Brooke Smith (born May 22, 1967 in New York City , New York ) is an American actress .

Life

Brooke Smith is the daughter of publisher Gene Smith and his wife and journalist Lois Smith. The American actor Robert Redford is her godfather. Brooke Smith is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts . She has been married to the Russian film producer Steve Lubensky since January 6, 1999 and gave birth to a daughter in 2001. In 2008 the couple adopted a girl from Ethiopia . Smith lives in New York City and Beachwood Canyon in Los Angeles , California.

Since 1988 she has played minor roles in numerous feature films. Her first well-known film role was in 1991 as Catherine Martin, the kidnapped young woman in The Silence of the Lambs . In 1995 she was named for her portrayal of Sonya in Vanja on 42nd Street a . a. nominated for the Independent Spirit Awards . In 2002 she had a supporting role as Officer Swanson in Bad Company - The World Is In Good Hands .

In recent years she has also had a number of recurring roles in popular television series: In Six Feet Under , she appeared in 2004 as Carolyn Pope, one of Claire Fisher's art teachers. In 2007 she starred in thirteen episodes of Dr. Kate Switzer in Crossing Jordan . Later that year she appeared in Weeds as Valerie Scottson . She achieved greater fame as cardiologist Dr. Erica Hahn in Grey's Anatomy , where - after previous guest appearances - she established herself as an integral part of the ensemble from 2006 in the fourth and fifth seasons. For this role she was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2008 and an Emmy in 2009.
