Ellen is a 20 year old anorexia patient. She comes from a difficult family background, the father is absent, she lives with a half-sister with the stepmother, with whom she does not get along, and Ellen's birth mother has left the family and has recently been living with a woman. Not only Ellen, but the whole family suffers from the difficult circumstances, especially since four attempts at therapy have already failed. She finally agrees to try a new therapy in a small group home. The group, led by a doctor who uses unconventional methods, consists of five young women and a ballet dancer who is also unable to work due to a knee injury.

production

The film was produced by AMBI Group, Sparkhouse Media, Mockingbird Pictures, Foxtail Entertainment, BondIt, and To The Bone Productions and is owned by Netflix, which acquired the rights for $ 8 million in 2017 following the success of the film at the Sundance Film Festival , expelled.

In the German dubbed version, Keanu Reeves is voiced by Benjamin Völz , Lily Collins by Kathrin Hanak.

background

The film is about a common problem that is rarely addressed in a feature film. According to research by the Robert Koch Institute in 2008, every third girl and every fifth boy between the ages of eleven and seventeen suffer from eating disorders, with the diseases occurring earlier and earlier.

Both the leading actress Lily Collins and the director Marti Noxon, on whose experience the script is based, have suffered from eating disorders in the past. Lily Collins, the daughter of Phil Collins , wrote openly about her problems with her body image and self-image in her book Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me .

Marti Noxon, a very successful screenwriter in the USA, had worked on the script for a long time, but then had great problems finding sponsors in Hollywood, as the producers rejected the film, among other things because of its lack of relevance, and could not imagine the material being a part could interest a wider audience. Only after a conversation with Bonnie Curtis, Karina Miller and Julie Lynn did the project get rolling. For Marti Noxon, To the Bone is her debut as a film director.

reception

In the run-up to the publication, there was worldwide media coverage about anorexia. Even before the film was broadcast, Change.org launched an online petition calling for theaters to boycott the film and calling on Netflix to withdraw the film. The petition says the film glamourizes the problem of mental illness, exacerbates the stigma surrounding eating disorders, and puts pressure on those who are about to get well.

To the Bone is aimed less at those affected than at all those who misunderstand anorexia or make it taboo. And so the film makes a good and extremely important contribution to questioning the image of the disease in our society. "
