Bad Company is an American action comedy directed by Joel Schumacher with Anthony Hopkins , Chris Rock and Peter Stormare in the lead roles. The film was released in 2002.

action

Kevin Pope and Officer Oakes are agents of the CIA . They persecute Russian mafiosi who want to sell a stolen nuclear weapon . Pope has arranged a deal to buy the bomb over several years of preparatory work, but is shot before the deal can be closed.

It turns out that Pope had a twin brother, Jake Hayes. Hayes, a small crook who makes a living from selling sports tickets, is trained by Oakes as a CIA agent within a few days . He is negotiating in a monastery near Prague to buy the atomic bomb for $ 19 million. Before the bomb can be handed over, however, a rival faction gets involved in the deal and steals the nuclear weapon. Since the access codes for the bomb are on a stolen laptop, which can only be started by Jake Hayes with an iris scan , the bomb is brought to the United States , Hayes is kidnapped and forced to reveal the access codes.

The terrorists want to cause a nuclear explosion at New York's Grand Central Terminal , which Hayes and Oakes can prevent at the last second.

criticism

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film contained numerous clichés and spread idiocy. He deserves to be destroyed. Berardinelli accused the producer Jerry Bruckheimer , testosterone produce -loaded films where one can understand with just a few brain cells that act.

Roger Ebert only praised the "sweet" and "believable" portrayal of Kerry Washington in the Chicago Sun-Times . He only wrote about the plot that there was one between the stunts, special effects and action scenes. He found the numerous monologues by Chris Rock "funny" but "strange".

The editorial staff of Cinema is of the opinion that the film is cast with Chris Rock, who "has not the slightest talent as an actor" and is more convincing as a "talented impromptu comedian". It is just as incomprehensible for the editors why Anthony Hopkins - following the film's title - goes into such a “bad company” and participates in a film production that comes up with “a hair-raising story construction”.

Björn Schaffner from Cineman.ch finds the words for the two main actors, "rarely has one seen such a bizarre duo on a screen". There is also little praise for the script and the responsible producers. "Since" Falling Down "one is not used to anything good from Schumacher, but one would at least have expected from producer Bruckheimer [...] to present the audience with a thumping pyrotechnic orgy. [...] He didn't even succeed in doing that. "

"The Pygmalion material in the form of a conventional buddy film, which suffers from an overly simple script and indisputable performance."

background

Parts of the film were made in the Czech capital, Prague . Most of the film was shot in the United States, with locations in New York City and Jersey City selected. Some scenes were shot in the Calvary Cemetery in Queens , others were shot in the towers of the World Trade Center , making the film production one of the last to be done in the World Trade Center.

The film was an estimated budget of 70 million US dollars available. In the United States, the film grossed over 30.1 million US dollars, including 11 million US dollars on the opening weekend. Worldwide revenues of nearly $ 66 million were achieved. In Germany more than 353,000 visitors were counted at the box office. The film was first seen in Colombia on April 26, 2002. It was released in the USA on June 4, 2002, and the film opened in cinemas in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on August 22, 2002. Due to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the planned release date in November 2001 was postponed in favor of a later premiere.

Originally the title of the film was supposed to be "Black Sheep" until it was noticed that in 1996 a film of the same name had already been released. Ironically, an alternative film title was chosen that is identical to the 1995 film Bad Company , but in terms of content bears no resemblance to this film.

Brooke Smith played a supporting role in the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs . Anthony Hopkins had played the male lead here.

The screenplay for the film was originally called the continuation of the film Blue Streak written.

The song that is played in the club before Jake goes to the DJ booth and also appears in the credits is called Breathe In, Breathe Out and comes from Ali and the St. Lunatics .
