Number 23 is an American mystery thriller directed by Joel Schumacher from 2007 .
action
The dog catcher Walter Sparrow is married and has one son. His wife Agatha buys the novel The Number 23 , which Walter begins to read shortly afterwards. He discovers some similarities between himself and the main character of the novel, the police detective Fingerling. The investigator was named after a children's book that Walter also owns.
The novel features a blonde who is obsessed with the number 23 and who eventually commits suicide. Walter discovers that the cross-sum of his social security number is also 23 and as the film progresses, Walter discovers more and more connections between his life and the number 23.
Finally Fingerling commits a murder. The novel ends with Fingerling running out of a hotel room onto the balcony. Walter is looking for the novelist who used the pseudonym Topsy Kretts and self-published only one book, as he sees a connection between the novel and real life. According to Walter's research, the actual author of the book is the alleged murderer of a student named Laura Tollins, who has disappeared without a trace since her 23rd birthday. Walter Sparrow then suspects that the author made a confession about his act in this book.
Through his wife, Walter learns that he himself is the author of the novel. Years ago, in an act of jealousy, he killed Laura Tollins, whom he was in love with. Walter buried the body in a park. For the act, a professor with whom Tollins was having an affair was arrested.
After removing the body, Walter went to a hotel, wrote the novel and jumped from the balcony of the hotel room. He survived the jump but lost memory. The manuscript was written by Dr. Leary, who was treating Walter, was found and published.
In the end, Walter stands by his act and goes to jail for it. The innocent professor is released.
Reviews
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that a thriller must have a surprising twist. In this film, the twist is not only revealed early, but also "awkward" and "not convincing". Jim Carrey is not a “complete miscast” for his role, but he lacks the necessary “intensity”. Berardinelli also criticized the direction of the film. At the end of his review, he scoffed that the film could be rated with the number zero rather than the number 23 in the title.
Justin Chang wrote in the industry journal Variety that the film lacks "narrative coherence". It is visually and psychologically "unclear" ("murky"); the thriller seems like an episode of Sesame Street . Neither Walter Sparrow nor Fingerling would dominate the film as the main character, Jim Carrey played both roles "confusing". Virginia Madsen is "OK" as Agatha Sparrow, but "rather less good" than Fabrizia.
The lexicon of international films said: "The ambitious puzzle about perception and (mis) interpretations of reality develops its own enigmatic fascination, which it loses a lot towards the end because it tries too pedantically to restore the established order."
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating “particularly valuable”.
Awards
Jim Carrey and the film were nominated for a 2007 Teen Choice Award in the horror film / thriller category. Harry Gregson-Williams was nominated for the 2007 World Soundtrack Award for this and several other films . Jim Carrey was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in 2008.
