The twenty-three (23) is the natural number between twenty-two and twenty-four . It is odd and a prime number .

23 is odd and a prime number . In addition, it has the following mathematical properties:

  • Smallest and next to that also the only natural number that cannot be written as a sum of less than nine cubic numbers (see also Waring's problem ).
  • Least odd prime outside of a prime twin
  • Smallest natural number for which there are cuboids with different positive edge lengths in pairs that together form a cuboid.
  • 23 is the only prime number whose faculty has exactly digits in the decimal system . There is no other prime with this property.

reception

The twenty-three, and their decimal checksum 5 are in Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea's trilogy Illuminatus in a self-conceived numerology as numbers of calamity, destruction, and not least the Illuminati called. The authors got the inspiration for this mystification from the short story 23 Skidoo by William S. Burroughs . In the following years, the 23 became one of the mystical numbers of pop culture and was taken up in various (film) productions:
