The twenty-three (23) is the natural number between twenty-two and twenty-four . It is odd and a prime number .

23 is odd and a prime number . In addition, it has the following mathematical properties:

• Smallest and next to that also the only natural number that cannot be written as a sum of less than nine cubic numbers (see also Waring's problem ). ${\displaystyle 239}$
• Least odd prime outside of a prime twin
• Smallest natural number for which there are cuboids with different positive edge lengths in pairs that together form a cuboid. ${\displaystyle n>1}$ ${\displaystyle n}$
• 23 is the only prime number whose faculty has exactly digits in the decimal system . There is no other prime with this property. ${\displaystyle p}$ ${\displaystyle p}$

The twenty-three, and their decimal checksum 5 are in Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea's trilogy Illuminatus in a self-conceived numerology as numbers of calamity, destruction, and not least the Illuminati called. The authors got the inspiration for this mystification from the short story 23 Skidoo by William S. Burroughs . In the following years, the 23 became one of the mystical numbers of pop culture and was taken up in various (film) productions:

• In Latigo with James Garner , the protagonist - as a running gag - always puts all his money on this number and loses. Only at the end of the film does he break the bank.
• In the film 23 - Nothing is as it seems (1998) , the hacker Karl Koch deals with myths that revolve around numbers.
• In Number 23 , Jim Carrey is haunted by the number.
• In Jeepers Creepers , the creeper wakes up to eat for 23 days every 23 years.
• The radio play series Revelation 23 deals, among other things, with conspiracy theories and mysteries.
• The minimal electro band Welle: Erdball dedicates their song 23 to the "band member" Commodore 64 , on the grounds that the number 64 "divided by two and then turned around" results in twenty-three and thus the number of the Illuminati.
• "23 Skidoo" was in the United States of the 1920s very well-known years of speech . It means something like “get out of here quickly” or “leave while it's still okay”. There is also a music band of the same name, see 23 Skidoo .
• 23 is the title of a compilation of short stories, edited by Thomas Le Blanc in July 2017 and published in the Fantastische Miniatures series of the Fantastic Library in Wetzlar.
• In Sebastian Fitzeks novel passenger 23 is claimed that 23 people a year disappear without a trace of cruise ships.
