The twenty-four (24) is the natural number between twenty-three and twenty-five . She is straight .

The number is twice the twelve , the basic number of the duodecimal system , and in the mythological sense a symbol of completeness. This fact provides the key to many uses of the number outside of mathematics, both in everyday life and in (Christian) mythology.

Mathematically, the number, like twelve, is particularly interesting because of its many divisors compared to its size :

  • A classic example of this is the division of the day into twenty-four hours , which goes back to the Babylonians . These had divided day and night into twelve equally long time units, making a total of twenty-four hours. The twenty-four division is also used as an angle measure in the astronomical hour angle .
  • It occurs, for example, as the fourth member in the sequence of the faculties and is therefore also the order of the rotational group S 4 of the cube and the octahedron .
  • She is the four-dimensional kiss number .

In Christian symbolism, for example, the double twelve appears in the distinction between the Old and New Testaments ; the former are represented by the twelve tribes of Israel and the latter by the apostles of Christ . Furthermore, the Tanach, as the holy scripture of Judaism, consists of twenty-four books, depending on how it is counted. These three uses of the number are repeated in both the Christian liturgy and the Bible itself; Many representations of the twenty-four can be found in the art of the Middle Ages and early modern times and can be traced back to their Christian symbolism.

In the case of Internet sites , the domain name is often supplemented with the number 24 at the end in order to suggest 24-hour availability, in contrast to other information sources or shops. The appearance of Scout24 Holding , which caused numerous imitators, was a pioneer here . From 1999 to 2002 "Deutsche Bank 24" was the name of Deutsche Bank's private customer division .

24 frames per second has been the international standard for film recording and projection since the 1920s. Since 2012, films in the high frame rate format have also used a higher refresh rate for cinema films.
