High frame rate
High Frame Rate , or HFR for short , is a format for digital cinema films in which a higher frame rate than the 24 frames per second known from classic film technology is used. When HFR is used for three-dimensional films, it is referred to as "HFR 3D".
The Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) HFR standard is not very widely used. In 2005, the DCI set preliminary unofficial standards for digital film productions. Otherwise, standardization in digital and analog film technology is dominated by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). Proponents of the format say that the higher frame rate improves the quality of the image, especially the 3D image, by reducing jitter and motion blur . Critics of the technology criticize the loss of the " cinematic look " and compare it with material that was processed with motion interpolation , especially the " soap opera effect ".
Analog HFR films
Douglas Trumbull developed Showscan in the 1970s and 1980s, a film process that uses 60 frames per second.
The film Momentum was shown at Expo 92 . Here it was the first film in IMAX HD - film format , which is 48 frames per second.
Maxivision 48 is a film format from 1999, which was never used and provided 48 frames per second.
Films in HFR-3D format
The first theatrical feature film to be released in HFR-3D format is Peter Jackson's The Hobbit film trilogy, starting with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in December 2012 and a refresh rate of 48 frames per second. Other filmmakers looking to use the format include James Cameron for his Avatar sequels and Andy Serkis in his adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm .
Upgrade of the projection technology
In Germany, the cinema chains Cinestar , KINOPOLIS , Cinemaxx , UCI Kinowelt and the Cineplex group invested in converting the The Hobbit trilogy to HFR 3D. The first HFR-3D projector with 60 frames per second (which corresponds to the high frame rate of James Cameron's film projects) in Austria was installed by the Cinepoint in Seefeld in Tyrol in May 2013. For the film "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" by Ang Lee In 120fps, 3D and 4K resolution , the Christie company developed a projector that could play this format.
Use outside of the cinema
Various camcorders offer amateur filmmakers the opportunity to film with 1080p50, 1080p60 or even higher resolution. With the Ultra HD Blu-ray , which was primarily developed for films in fourfold Full HD resolution, it is also possible to save and play back movies for home users at up to 60 fps, but without stereoscopic 3D, in contrast to the cinema so either HFR or 3D must be dispensed with. Home users also have the option of using motion interpolation on many TV sets, which, depending on the device, allows even higher frame rates. However, the additional frames calculated with this technology do not contain any additional image information and so cannot keep up with a native increased frame rate in terms of quality.
Since October 2014, the YouTube video platform has also allowed videos to be played back at up to 60 frames per second, provided the browser used is supported.
