Ultra HD Blu-ray is an optical data storage for Ultra-HD - Movies .

specification

Like its predecessor Blu-ray Disc, Ultra HD Blu-ray was specified by the Blu-ray Disc Association . The word “disc” does not appear in the name of the new format.

Storage media

The specification prescribes two- and three-layer optical data carriers with 66 and 100 gigabytes of storage respectively. Players for the previous Blu-ray Disc format cannot play the new media. Ultra HD Blu-ray capable devices are, however, downwardly compatible with the video version of the Blu-ray Disc.

Video and playback devices

The eponymous Ultra HD resolution is a maximum of 3840 × 2160 pixels. In contrast to the predecessor Blu-ray Disc, a high contrast range ( HDR-10 or Dolby Vision ), a higher frame rate and a larger color space ( ITU-R recommendation BT.2020 ) are also supported. Movies in 3D and 4K are not supported on Ultra HD Blu-ray, but conventional Blu-ray Disc formats with 3D can still be played.

H.265 is used as the video standard . Ultra HD televisions must have the HDMI 2.0 interface for playback . The HDCP 2.2 copy protection is also required .

The new editions of the Xbox One - the X-Box One S and the X-Box One X are UHD players.

Audio

Ultra HD Blu-ray supports the object-based audio formats DTS: X and Dolby Atmos , as well as the channel-based format Auro-3D .

Digital bridge

Optionally, providers of UHD Blu-rays can allow an export protected by digital rights management (DRM) and digital watermarks ("digital bridge") so that UHD Blu-ray films can be transferred to devices such as tablets.
