The Peñamaior Monastery (Santa María de Peñamayor) is a former Cistercian monastery in the province of Lugo in Galicia in Spain . It is located on the slopes of the Sierra de Pena do Pico in the Concello Becerreá around 44 km southwest of Lugo on the old main road N-VI to Ponferrada .
history
The monastery joined the Cistercian order in 1225 as a subsidiary of the Carracedo monastery west of Ponferrada in Bierzo in Castile-León . It thus belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery . In the monastery suspension ( disentailment ) under the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal the monastery in 1835, was dissolved.
Buildings and plant
The three-nave, four-bay church with three apses (the middle polygonal, the sides semicircular) is Romanesque. The facade was changed in the 18th century; it still has a portal with semicircular arches. Apart from the church, nothing has been preserved from the monastery.
