The Schöneberg Gasometer is a low-pressure gas tank that was put into operation in 1913 and decommissioned in 1995 on the former GASAG site in Berlin-Schöneberg . The 78 meter high building, which has been a listed building since 1994, is a landmark and striking landmark of Schöneberg on the EUREF campus in the Rote Insel district .

properties

The Schöneberger Gasometer belongs to the type of telescopic gas container , it stored the town gas in an extendable bell, which consisted of several telescopically nested steel elements, so-called "water cups", and was embedded in a water basin. With its maximum storage capacity, the gas tank was able to store 160,000 m³ of gas that was used for household use and street lighting.

history

View from the steel frame into the former gasometer

The Schöneberg Gasometer was built by Berlin-Anhaltische Maschinenbau AG ( BAMAG ) as an engineering structure between 1908 and 1910 and at that time, with its filling volume, it was one of the three largest gas containers in Europe. During the construction, a serious accident occurred on August 19, 1909, when an 85-meter-high assembly mast collapsed due to the vibrations caused by passing trains, broke through the container frame and fell onto the tracks of the Ringbahn . As a result - due to approval problems and protests from residents - commissioning was delayed until 1913. Originally, the plan was to build the gasometer in what is now the Wagner district in Friedenau , which met with great resistance from the population of the newly established country house colony.

There were three more (but smaller) gas containers on the grounds of the Schöneberger Gasanstalt

The painter Lyonel Feininger captured the symbol of the Red Island in the picture. The picture Gasometer in Berlin-Schöneberg was probably made in autumn 1912 and is heavily influenced by Futurism .

The telescopic gas container was placed under monument protection in 1994, together with other buildings on the site, including the retort house and boiler house designed by the Berlin architect Alfred Messel , and was decommissioned in 1995. The guide frame of the telescopic container is heavily rusted. On May 5, 2011, the renovation of the steel structure began, which, according to the client, should take four years and cost 3.8 million euros. It is now assumed that the renovation will not be completed before 2020.

New use

In February 2007, the private project development company denkmal + plus acquired the GASAG site together with the industrial monument and at the end of May 2007 presented a project outline for the redesign of the area and the use of the gasometer. The plan is to erect a building inside the gasometer. In addition to the listed old buildings that are being renovated, numerous new buildings are to be built on the surrounding property, which should initially have a height of up to 65 meters, but now 57 meters for the construction site in the Gasometer (upper edge 98.5 meters) due to objections from residents above sea level ). The top two fields of the gasometer's guide frame remain free. According to the development plan, buildings with a maximum height of between 29.5 and 55 meters can be built on the other nine construction sites, but roof structures can exceed these heights.

While the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district office is supporting the project, some residents of the Rote Insel have come together in a citizens 'initiative Gasometer Schöneberg and are critically examining the project developers' plans.

At the beginning of September 2008, Europe's largest LED advertising wall was installed on the gasometer, which broadcast advertising images and videos in the dark. The proceeds from this were to be used in part to renovate the gasometer. At the end of 2011, the illuminated advertising was taken out of service and dismantled in spring 2012. A significant contribution to the refurbishment of the gasometer was not achieved.

Guided tours for visitors to the gasometer have been offered since 2009.

Since August 2009, the former “Bundestag arena ”, a “ flying structure ” modeled on the Reichstag dome as an event space, has stood on the area in the middle of the gasometer . The dome is surrounded by water and can be heated in a CO₂-neutral manner. When the construction, designed as a film tent, was installed, there were numerous noticeable changes to the water tank of the gasometer, which were criticized by the preservation authorities .

Since 24 January 2011, the event dome in the Gasometer and a neighboring building are a biogas - CHP power and heat. A wind measuring system has been on the top ring of the gasometer since 2011 . It is part of an intelligent power grid in the surrounding area (micro smart grid) . The network is supplied on site with electricity from renewable energies .

The dome is used for various types of events. From September 11, 2011 to November 29, 2015, Günther Jauch held the political talk of the same name in the first in the event dome.

Since the winter semester 2012/2013, the Technical University of Berlin has been offering three interdisciplinary master’s courses on the subject of "City and Energy" on the new TU campus EUREF at the Gasometer Berlin-Schöneberg:

  • Energy-efficient construction and operation of buildings ( M.Sc. )
  • Energy-efficient urban transport systems (M.Sc.)
  • Urban Supply Infrastructures (M.Sc.)

The music video for the song Lila Wolken by Marteria , Yasha & Miss Platnum , released on September 14, 2012, plays on the top of the gasometer.

A building application was submitted in March 2020, according to which a building with 35,000 square meters of office space is to be built in the Gasometer for around 200 million euros. Allegedly, Tesla intends to bring 2000 employees to a development center there. The plan is to leave a field of the former Fühurngsgerüst free above; Monument protection advocates for two free fields.

In art and literature

The American painter Lyonel Feininger lived in Berlin from 1887 to 1937 and, among other things, painted the Schöneberg gasometer in flaming colors. The painting, created between 1907 and 1912, shows the steel container in yellow-orange-red tones, in front of which there is a small steam locomotive that brings a delivery of coal. Two workers in blue clothes deep in conversation form a clear color contrast to the warm tones. The picture is part of an art exhibition in the Ephraim-Palais under the motto Berlin in the painting , which can be seen in summer 2018.

In the detective novel Goldstein , the third volume in the Gereon Rath series by Volker Kutscher set in 1931 , the showdown takes place on the dome of the gasometer.
