The live broadcast has been broadcast since September 11, 2011 on Sunday evening at 9:45 p.m. on the public television program Das Erste and on the public radio program hr-info and lasted 60 minutes. Günther Jauch was the moderator and namesake of the show . The last broadcast took place on November 29, 2015.

According to a press report , Jauch's production company i & u TV received 10.5 million euros per year for the show .

Since January 17, 2016, Anne Will , Jauch's predecessor, has occupied the broadcast slot again.

Concept and process

Günther Jauch broadcast under the slogan “The political talk from the heart of the capital”. Every Sunday at 9.45 p.m., moderator Günther Jauch received guests from politics and society in the studio in the Berlin Gasometer to discuss the topic of the week with them. The talk should be current, relevant and emotionally moving for the audience.

The number of guests was not exactly specified. The discussion often took place in groups of five to six people, but one-on-one discussions were also possible.

On special occasions, extra programs were also inserted into the program, such as B. on February 17, 2012 on Christian Wulff's resignation , on June 16, 2013 on the flood situation in Germany and on January 11, 2015 on the terrorist attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo .

Production and broadcast

The Schöneberg Gasometer, where the show was produced

The talk show was not produced in a typical television studio, but in an old industrial monument whose 80-meter-high striking steel structure is visible from afar. Inside the gasometer there is an event room modeled on the Reichstag dome, which can seat around 300 spectators. The dome was built in 2006 as a talk arena for the soccer World Cup and was then in front of the Bundestag building in Berlin.

The show was produced on behalf of Norddeutscher Rundfunk by the production company i & u TV, which was founded in 2000 by Günther Jauch. The technical implementation has been carried out by Studio Berlin Adlershof GmbH since the show began .

The program was broadcast live from Berlin . The broadcast usually started at 9:45 p.m. on Sundays. In addition, the program was also shown on the Internet as a live stream on ARD and Das Erste Mediathek . The programs were usually available there for a year.

Odds

The opening program was watched by around five million viewers aged three and over, and around 1.2 million in the advertising-relevant group, which corresponded to a market share of 18.6% and 9.7% respectively.

The quota record was set on September 1, 2013. The 78th program, which was broadcast following the television duel between Angela Merkel and Peer Steinbrück , reached 8.23 million viewers aged three and over. This surpassed the previous record broadcast (number 67 on April 21, 2013) with the topic “The case of Uli Hoeneß - from clean man to tax evader?”, Which reached 6.67 million viewers. The third highest reach was achieved by the 53rd program on December 16, 2012 on the subject of “The Red Light District - How brutal is the sex business?” With 6.27 million viewers.

Incidents

On May 6, 2012, an incident occurred in the current program when the acting student David Schellenschmidt loudly interrupted the Governing Mayor of Berlin , Klaus Wowereit , and tried to get on stage. He was overpowered and taken out of the studio by three security guards. Jauch, however, had the viewer lead back into the studio with the words “Nobody here is simply cut out of the show - like in the Ukraine”. The background to this was the ongoing debate about the new building for the Berlin drama school , for which Wowereit is responsible. A complaint against David Schellenberg was waived.

A similar incident occurred on March 9, 2014. A spectator approached the former EKD council chairman Wolfgang Huber , but was overwhelmed by two security guards and led out of the studio. Jauch asked the director to give him details. At the end of the program, Jauch stated that the man had private problems with his apartment and that this program was a "scam". Accordingly, the man is doing well, but he cannot be asked around to discuss his concerns.

The broadcast of the episode on February 1, 2015 was initially not broadcast live due to a power failure in parts of Berlin-Schöneberg . The ARD bridged with the broadcast of an older crime scene episode and pointed out the problem with subtitles. The live broadcast of the talk show finally began at around 10:05 p.m., the subsequent broadcasts were postponed accordingly.

On April 19, 2015, against Günther Jauch's will, studio guest Harald Höppner forced a minute's silence for boat refugees who had recently drowned in the Mediterranean Sea. After the studio guests had risen to a minute's silence at Höppner's request, Jauch gave up his resistance, but ended the minute's silence after 37 seconds, against the will of Höppner, who stoically looked at his watch.

Controversy and criticism

Legal dispute with Bettina Wulff

In the broadcast of December 18, 2011, Jauch mentioned a report by the Berliner Zeitung . Rumors had been circulated in it that the picture was considering publishing an article about the alleged past life of the then Federal President's wife Bettina Wulff in the red-light district. A few months later, Wulff filed an injunction against Jauch. He agreed through his lawyer not to repeat such allusions, but let it be known that he had never made a false statement of fact, but only quoted from a report and formulated a question from it. "Since I am not interested in a dispute with Ms. Wulff, however, I had the legal dispute ended before Ms. Wulff's complaint was even officially served on me."

Debate over video recording of Yanis Varoufakis

A public debate arose in March 2015 when the Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis was confronted with excerpts from a video from 2013 that was distributed via social networks and allegedly showed Germany the finger . Varoufakis described the video excerpt as "fake" and published a long version on Twitter. The hint itself, as the media criticized Varoufakis, is real. However, the gesture was taken out of context and placed in the wrong context. In May 2013, Varoufakis described the situation in Greece five years ago. In the context he said that in 2013 it was not an option to show Germany the middle finger. The German television satirist Jan Böhmermann , on the other hand, claimed to have initiated the manipulation, which turned out to be a satirical hoax. Controversies also developed about the editorial embedding of the contribution by Günther Jauch . Media journalist Stefan Niggemeier said, for example, that Varoufakis' statement had been completely falsified because the audience was not clearly aware of the context. He said he “attacked his own politicians in Athens on a stage in Zagreb as a scientist.” In 2010 he would have sent his country bankrupt in their place before the first aid package and thus ultimately showed his creditors the middle finger according to the motto: “You can now solve the problem alone ”.

The deputy editor-in-chief of the Austrian standard, Rainer Schüller, judged that Böhmermann had published “probably the best media review in a long time” with his contribution . Broken down to the journalistic craft, what remains is that mistakes have happened. He quoted Böhmermann as saying: “You did not falsify the video. You just took the video out of context and dragged a Greek politician through the studio by the finger ”. The " slap " also goes in the direction of the media consumer. Other media, such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung or the NZZ am Sonntag , were also heavily criticized, including the ARD calling for Günther Jauch to be removed. He was said to have carried out "the worst campaign journalism" and "violated fundamental journalistic standards".
