Michael H. Spreng (born July 10, 1948 in Darmstadt ; † July 28, 2020 in Mallorca ) was a German journalist . From 1989 to 2000 he was the editor -in- chief of Bild am Sonntag and from then on was a political advisor . In 2002 he was the campaign manager for Edmund Stoiber , candidate for chancellor .

Life

Spreng lived in Frankfurt am Main from the age of 6. During his youth he was a boy scout and a member of the German Scouting Association Sankt Georg until he was 17 . He passed his Abitur in 1968 in Frankfurt. Even while he was still at school, he wrote for local reporting for the Frankfurter Neue Presse .

From 1968 to 1970 he completed an internship at the Frankfurter Neue Presse. At the same time he wrote for Die Welt am Sonntag . In 1971 he became editor at Die Welt and Bild , where he initially wrote in the field of domestic politics and later became deputy office manager and deputy editor-in-chief of Bild. From 1983 to 1989 he was editor-in-chief of the tabloid Kölner Express .

In 1989 he returned to Springer-Verlag and was editor-in-chief of Bild am Sonntag until 2000 . After conflicts with the management of the Springer concern, he was fired on October 13, 2000.

Since July 2001 he has been an independent communications and media consultant. In 2002, Spreng was the campaign manager for Edmund Stoiber . He then worked for the CDU candidate Jürgen Rüttgers in 2004 as a media advisor in the NRW state election campaign and as editor-in-chief of the talk show Menschen bei Maischberger . From 2005 to the end of 2008 explosive wrote as a columnist for the Hamburger Abendblatt and other newspapers, had since 2007 also shareholders in Cologne online media magazine DWDL.de . It was only in October 2019 that he sold his 20 percent stake to the deputy DWDL.de editor-in-chief Uwe Mantel and the editor Alexander Krei.

Since February 2009 he has been running the weblog explosives . After a long illness he died of cancer.

In their obituaries, colleagues described Michael Spreng as, among other things, a razor-sharp analyst of politics and its staff, as well as a voice that was liberal in the good sense.
