"To ask immigrants to surrender skin and hair to a vague German existence that the Germans themselves do not know what that could be is presumptuous."

- Mely Kiyak : The Time , 2006

For the Körber Foundation , Kiyak contributed significantly to the book Zweiheimisch (2006) about bicultural life in Germany and in 2007 published book 10 for Germany .

She regularly spends a few days in the Benedictine Abbey of St. Mary in Fulda, where she and Sister Christa publish the magazine Winke for the organic gardener .

Sarrazin controversy

In May 2012, in her column for the Berliner Zeitung and the Frankfurter Rundschau , Kiyak described Thilo Sarrazin , whose right half of his face is partially paralyzed as a result of an operation on a tumor, as a "lisping, stuttering, twitching human caricature" after a television appearance. For this she was criticized in the world and the picture . One week after the appearance of the article, Kiyak stated her intention to point out the “non-physical imperfections in his appearance […]. If I had known the physiological background, I would not have chosen the picture. I regret that very much! ”After persistent criticism, the editors-in-chief of the printing newspapers spoke of a“ perfidious smear campaign ”against the author, which was being promoted in particular via the Politically Incorrect blog . Kiyak documented the nature and direction of these attacks in a critical article on the blog in the Berliner Zeitung . The journalists' association New German Media Makers and the taz also took Kiyak under protection. Friday commented that Kiyak “ got to feel the shitstorm that she wanted to set in motion against [… Sarrazin]” in the end.

The German Press Council saw the "violation of the journalistic principles as so serious" that it expressed disapproval of the Berliner Zeitung . Sarrazin had been " violated in his human dignity ". However, no reprimand was issued because of Kiyak's apology.

"Hate Poetry"

Since 2012, Kiyak has performed together with the journalists Deniz Yücel , Yassin Musharbash , Özlem Topçu , Özlem Gezer , Hasnain Kazim , Doris Akrap and Ebru Taşdemir as part of the “anti-racist reading show” Hate Poetry , during which they read angry letters to the editor in the style of a poetry slam .
