Hate poetry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hate Poetry is an “anti-racist reading show” in which German journalists with a non-German background read out racist letters to the editor in the style of a poetry slam . The show was invented by the Berlin journalist Ebru Taşdemir , the first event took place in January 2012 in the taz -Café in Berlin. The founding team also included Mely Kiyak , Yassin Musharbash , Deniz Yücel and the taz editor Doris Akrap as moderator ; later Özlem Topçu , Hasnain Kazim and Özlem Gezer were added.

Hate poetry has now established itself as a genre and is also offered by other groups and organizers.

Reviews

“Rarely has racism been so entertaining,” said Die Welt about hate poetry , while the taz spoke of a “ cathartic reading”. The philosopher Martin Seel interpreted in the Süddeutsche Zeitung : “At first I thought it was just laughing at these idiots who write such letters. But I think there is more. The journalists take the racist comments seriously precisely by not taking them too seriously. They always try to turn the seriousness of the other side into the opposite: into the comic. The more fanatical the other side's seriousness, the more serious their attempt. "

"Hapogepegida"

In connection with the demonstration by the “Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West” (PEGIDA), Mely Kiyak wrote: “PEGIDA may not talk to 'the media'. But they have been in lively correspondence with us journalists and creators of Hate Poetry for years. Every letter we read describes the fears and needs of the good, silent demonstrators. Hate Poetry takes these concerns seriously and presents them appropriately ”. As a reaction to the PEGIDA demonstrations, the hate poetry troupe appeared in Dresden on December 19, 2014 , the event had the ironic motto “HAPOGEPEGIDA” (“ Hate Poetry against PEGIDA”).

Award

In 2014 the founding team of Hate Poetry was named Journalist of the Year in the “Special Prize” category. “ Hate Poetry has become a brand and a role model for other editorial offices: funny, clever, entertaining, shocking and eye-opening. It also helps the journalists concerned to deal with racist hostility, ”said the jury's statement.
