Life
Alfred Koch was born to a father of German descent and a Russian mother in the Kazakh SSR. His father Reinhold Koch came from the formerly German village Michaelsfeld , today Dschiginka, in the Caucasus. Koch began studying at a university in Togliatti in 1978 and graduated in 1983 from the Leningrad Financial and Economic Institute with a degree in economic cybernetics. Koch received his doctorate in 1987 in the field of economic cybernetics and received a positive review from Anatoly Chubais, after which he was a research assistant at the Leningrad research institute "Prometeus". From 1988 to 1990 he was a lecturer in radio electronics at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in the Faculty of Economics and Administration.
In 1990 Koch was elected mayor of the St. Petersburg district of Sestrorezk.
From 1991 he worked in leading positions in privatization authorities (svglw. Treuhandanstalt ), was appointed deputy chairman in 1993 and finally chairman of the State Privatization Committee of the Russian Federation on September 12, 1996. On March 17, 1997, he was also one of the Vice Prime Ministers in the government of Viktor Chernomyrdin . During this time, Koch received a fee of $ 100,000 for an unpublished book on the history of privatization in Russia. After it was publicly assumed that these were covert bribes to Koch and his co-authors (including Anatoli Tschubais), Koch resigned from all offices on August 13, 1997.
On September 1, 1997, he became chairman of Montes Auri AG, an investment company that invests private Russian and foreign capital in Russian companies. In June 2000 Alfred Koch moved to the management of Gazprom-Media, a subsidiary of the energy company Gazprom , and managed the takeover of the NTW television station by Gazprom-Media. The transmitter's transformation into a propaganda organ was one of the reasons for his turning away from the Putin system . He handed over the position at Gazprom to Boris Jordan in October 2001 and switched back to the head of the Montes Auri.
In February 2002, Koch was nominated as a member of the Duma by the Leningrad Region Parliament . After strong resistance against himself, he had to withdraw his candidacy. Koch also led the 2003 election campaign for the Union of Right Forces party . After their election defeat, he withdrew from politics.
In 2006 Koch wrote the Russian bestseller Eine Kiste Vodka ( Ящик водки ), a dialogue with journalist Igor Swinarenko about the period from 1982 to 2001. The English translation was published in spring 2009.
In 2008 he financed a point-by-point scientific refutation of denial of the Holocaust under the title "Denial of Denial" (Отрицание отрицания), with Pawel Poljan . It was the first book on the subject in Russia. Koch is a frequent commentator on Medved, a glossy Russian magazine for men, where he writes about history and travel.
According to the magazine Der Spiegel , Koch is a “sharp critic” of President Putin's foreign policy in the Ukraine crisis and “left for Germany for fear of prosecution”.
