The Weissenburg ruins are the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle in the municipality of Därstetten in the Swiss canton of Bern from the 13th century.
Location and description
The castle hill is located west of Därstetten and can be reached via a road.
Remains of the southern curtain wall (45 m), the round tower and a defensive tower in front are still visible .
history
In 1278 the castle was first mentioned as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Weissenburg . Their territory extended over parts of the Lower Simmental from Oberwil to Diemtigen . The von Weissenburgs are most likely the successors of the von Erlenbach family . At the end of the 15th century the castle was abandoned and began to fall apart. At the beginning of the 18th century one of the defense towers was still standing, but it was used as a quarry and is no longer available today.
