Ines Pohl (born April 12, 1967 in Mutlangen ) is a German journalist . From 2009 to 2015 she was editor-in-chief of taz . She then worked as a correspondent for Deutsche Welle , the state foreign broadcaster, before taking over its editor-in-chief in March 2017. Since July 2020 she has taken over the management of the Deutsche Welle Studios in Washington.

Life

Pohl's mother is a teacher, the father is a skilled worker. In Mutlangen, Pohl took part in meetings of the peace movement in the press hut and in demonstrations against the stationing of Pershing II missiles .

After graduating from the Staatliches Aufbaugymnasium mit Heim (ABG-GD), a boarding school with a focus on music in Schwäbisch Gmünd , Pohl studied German and Scandinavian studies at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . After completing her master's degree in 1995, she worked as a women's representative at the Philosophical Faculty. In 2004/2005 she spent a year at Harvard University on a scholarship from the Nieman Foundation for Journalism . There she met her future life partner.

In addition, she began to work as a freelance journalist in the 1990s, including for radio ffn and various regional newspapers. She completed her traineeship at the Hessische / Niedersächsische Allgemeine and within ten years reached the position of Head of Politics. In 2008 she went to Berlin as a correspondent for the media group Ippen . In July 2009 she became editor-in-chief of the taz (author abbreviation IPO ), from April 2014 Pohl held the position together with Andreas Rüttenauer as a dual head. In July 2015, her resignation as editor-in-chief was announced. At the end of the year, she moved to Deutsche Welle's Washington studio and became the station's editor-in-chief on March 1, 2017.

In July 2020, Pohl will take over the management of the Washington studio .

In February 2012, Pohl defended the reprint of a controversial comment on Joachim Gauck's nomination as Federal President with freedom of expression.

In August 2013, Pohl rejected the publication of an article entitled “Liberated Human Material” on pedophilia and green ideology because it did not meet journalistic standards, and rejected allegations of having made a political decision in the run-up to the 2013 federal election .

After an interview conducted by two employees of the taz on August 20, 2013 with the Federal Minister of Economics and FDP chairman Philipp Rösler was not approved for publication by the FDP press office, the taz only printed the questions asked on September 9, 2013 in Rösler was also asked how he dealt with racist remarks. Pohl rejected the accusation made by the press office of the FDP and a representative of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation that the taz touched on racist resentment.

Public offices

As a member of the advisory board of Youth Against AIDS , Pohl supports an initiative initiated and led by young people.

Awards

In 2009, Pohl was voted Journalist of the Year 2009 in the “Newcomer” category by a jury from Medium Magazin .
