Alfred Draxler (born January 25, 1953 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German journalist .

Life

On January 1, 2001, he also took over the management of the sports department at Bild am Sonntag . From November 1, 2004 to January 31, 2014 Draxler was deputy editor-in-chief Kai Diekmann at Bild, then he became editor-in-chief of Sport Bild . He is also the author of two books on football. Draxler is married to the CDU politician Martina Krogmann .

criticism

The sports and especially the football coverage of the Bild newspaper is repeatedly criticized for being biased. Draxler brought criticism here, for example, his long-standing personal ties to Bild columnist Franz Beckenbauer , which, according to critics, is associated with the BILD newspaper's very gentle reporting on the person Beckenbauer. The closeness to Lothar Matthäus , who was therefore always suspected of having disclosed internal information to the press, and the failed attempt to succeed him after Rudi Völler's resignation as national coach in 2004, point in a similar direction.

National coach Jürgen Klinsmann , who, contrary to years of practice, did not give the Bild-Zeitung exclusive access to the national soccer team, faced massive criticism in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup ("Grinsi-Klinsi"), which suddenly turned into the opposite after the successful summer fairy tale should run.

Draxler is also repeatedly associated with journalistic derailments by critics. In his picture column, he said that football player Benny Lauth should "really have to go to his fray, right?" The case of Austrian Finance Minister Karl-Heinz Grasser , who was shown in BILD with his wife in a pose suggesting oral sex, Draxler justified by arguing that Grasser and his wife were part of the jet set and that they had "not claimed that the sex was carried out".

In 2008 he was accused of having been involved in a BILD campaign against Anne Will for personal reasons, although he was mainly responsible for sports within the newspaper . Draxler's wife, the CDU politician Martina Krogmann , is the godmother of the son of CDU politician Friedbert Pflüger . He had vehemently demanded Will's resignation and had a detailed say in BILD during this time.

In the course of the discussion about possible bribe payments in the run-up to the award of the 2006 World Cup , triggered by a report by the Spiegel in October 2015, Draxler took the responsible persons around Franz Beckenbauer, Günter Netzer and Wolfgang Niersbach under protection. He wrote that his "intensive research" had shown that the summer fairy tale had not been bought. As Spiegel reported in October 2018, Draxler sent this article to both Niersbach and Netzer's wife Elvira before publication. The subject lines of the two emails were "I can still change everything", which is in blatant contradiction to the content of the later article, in which Draxler emphasizes supposed independence and writes that he has completely excluded any influence on his research.
