Fu Xiancai

Fu Xiancai ( Chinese  付 先 财 , Pinyin Fù Xiāncái ) (* 1959 ) is a Chinese farmer and civil rights activist .

biography

Fu Xiancai grew up on the Yangtze River . The corn farmer began to get involved in politics in 1994 . Due to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (construction period 1995 to 2012), the residents of his village had to be relocated. As early as 1997 he was assigned a new house in the village of Yangguidian, where he now lives with his family.

Since then he has made a name for himself and his fellow fate by petitions for outstanding compensation payments. The government had promised every resettled person equivalent housing and financial compensation of the equivalent of 3,000 euros. He was known to the authorities and had a certain prominence due to his commitment. He personally handed over 8,000 farmers' signatures to the Beijing Appeals Office. After his return to the county town of Zigui ( Hubei Province) detained for five days, but then this was withdrawn as an illegal act and the equivalent of 200 euros was paid to each of the farmers. Several attempts were made to intimidate him, including through thrown window panes and (presumably) hired thugs.

On May 19, 2006, he gave a critical interview to ARD . The police then interrogated him on June 8th. On the way back he was attacked according to his own account and fell down a slope onto a concrete slab, causing serious injuries. He has since been paralyzed from the neck down. He was denied medical help after the first emergency care - even after urging the German government - because he could not pay for it. The German embassy then sent a representative and the embassy doctor from Beijing to Yichang and handed over the required 60,000 yuan (about 5930 euros). A two-hour operation was performed on June 18 and was successful.

On September 22nd, 2006, Fu Xiancai was transferred to a rehabilitation clinic in Beijing. The special medical transport from Yichang, Hubei Province, central China, took 19 hours. The seriously injured person survived the transfer according to the circumstances. The rehabilitation period is given as 3 months. The stay and the treatment are made possible by German donations. Meanwhile, he announced that he would continue to campaign for the rights of people resettled by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. It is not known who were the perpetrators who hit him.
