Peter Neher

Peter Neher (born May 1, 1955 in Pfronten , Allgäu ) is a German Roman Catholic clergyman. He has been President of the German Caritas Association since 2003 .

Life

Peter Neher initially completed an apprenticeship as a banker from 1971 to 1973 . From 1976 to 1979 he studied Catholic theology and pedagogy at the Catholic University of Eichstätt . 1981 with a degree in theology at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In 1983 he received in Augsburg the priesthood . He completed additional training with a focus on pastoral care and worked as a chaplain in Landsberg am Lech (1983–1985) and as a hospital chaplain in Günzburg (1985–1989). In 1989 he became Ars moriendi - death support by laypeople. A historical-pastoral theological analysis to Dr. theol. PhD . Until 1994 he was pastor in Kempten (Allgäu) and from 1994 to 1999 he was sub-rain of the episcopal seminary in Augsburg . On January 1, 2000 he became director of the Caritas Association for the Diocese of Augsburg.

In 2003 Peter Neher was elected President of the German Caritas Association. With around 617,000 employees and half a million voluntary or voluntary helpers in over 24,000 institutions and services, the Catholic welfare association is one of the largest private employers in Germany. In October 2009 and October 2015, Neher was confirmed in office for a further six years.

In December 2004, Neher was appointed honorary professor for Caritas studies by the theological faculty of the Philosophical-Theological University of Vallendar.

Neher is also an advisor to the Commission for Charitable Issues of the German Bishops' Conference . In 2005 he was appointed to the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum” . In 2007 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed prelate .
