The seminary of St. Hieronymus is the diocesan seminary of the diocese of Augsburg . The seminary bears the name of the church father and theologian Hieronymus , the author of the Latin translation of the Bible, the Vulgate, and the patron saint of scholars and students.

This seminary was originally located in Dillingen on the Danube as the Jesuit college Collegium St. Hieronymi . In the 1970s it was moved to Augsburg. The inauguration of the new seminar building there was held by the then Pope John Paul II in 1987. The seminary aims to prepare and train young candidates for the priesthood on the path to priesthood .

introduction

St. Hieronymus is one of the largest seminaries in the German-speaking area. Its history goes back to the 16th century. The seminary of the diocese of Augsburg, which is now based in Augsburg-Hochfeld, was originally located in Dillingen on the Danube , which was also the seat of the Bishop of Augsburg for a long time. When the University of Augsburg was founded in the 20th century, the seminary was relocated to Augsburg. The theological training of seminarians takes place at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Augsburg .

History

In 1549, the prince-bishop of Augsburg, Cardinal Truchsess Otto von Waldburg, established the "Collegium Sancti Hieronymi" for the training of priests in Dillingen on the Danube, the episcopal town at that time. In 1563 he handed over its management together with the Dillingen University to the responsibility of the Jesuits where numerous well-known theologians taught over the course of time. So were Johann Michael Sailer and later Cardinal Walter Brandmüller worked there as professors.

historical development

Theological University in Dillingen

The Societas Jesu (Jesuits) was responsible for the training of priests in the diocese of Augsburg until 1773 . Thanks to them, the Dillinger University gained a good reputation in the German-speaking world. In 1614, Bishop Heinrich von Knöringen founded the Episcopal Clerical Seminary with implementation of the Trento Council (Tridentine Council). This averted the crisis of the Reformation period that existed for the Augsburg clergy . After secularization , the Dillinger Seminar began to flourish again. Today the Bavarian Academy for Teacher Training and Personnel Management is housed in the premises of the college . The library and the Golden Hall are worth seeing.

Seminar in Pfaffenhausen

After the space in Dillingen was limited, Prince Bishop Joseph Landgrave of Hesse created an additional seminar in Pfaffenhausen in the Unterallgäu district in 1745 , where the pastoral training of future clergy took place. Today's parish church served the students as the seminary church . This explains their striking size. After the secularization in 1803, the Pfaffenhausen seminar was closed again. In 1894 it became the property of Dominikusringenisen , today a home for the blind is housed in the former seminary.

Relocation to Augsburg

The University of Augsburg was founded in 1970/71 . In this way, Bishop Josef Stimpfle arranged for the seminary to be transferred to Augsburg. Initially, the seminary was located in the Mother House of the Sisters of Mercy . In 1987 it was relocated to the new building designed by Alexander Freiherr von Branca in Augsburg-Hochfeld. The construction of the seminary attracted international attention. In modern buildings, the seminarians should be trained up to date and prepared for the path to the priest.

On May 4, 1987 by the then Pope John Paul II. Solemn benediction made.

"With the help of God, the new seminary is to become a place for the formation of generations of priests well into the third millennium." (Quote from the foundation stone certificate)

The seminar today

Location

The seminary is located in the Hochfeld planning area, about 8 kilometers south of Augsburg city center and immediately north of the Augsburg university district, where the University of Augsburg is located.

The St. Hieronymus Seminary is conveniently located on Haunstetter Strasse: to the south, a direct feeder leads from Bundesstrasse 17 via Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse to Haunstetter Strasse. To the north, the seminar can be reached either from the east via Bundesstraße 300 from Friedberg or via the city center. The Haunstetter Straße train stop and the Berufsschule and Siemens tram stops are close to the seminar. The city center can be reached on foot in just over half an hour from the seminar.

Exterior view

The seminary of St. Jerome was designed and implemented by the architect Alexander von Branca . The seminar complex is divided into several connected buildings. These include a living area for the seminarians in the form of a quarter circle, another living area, which is mainly used as a student residence for external students, a gym, a large dining room, classrooms and study rooms as well as a spacious library . The building also has a large hall for conferences, events and celebrations. In the middle of this complex which is geostete Seminar church , attached to it is the seminary chapel .

A Kaplan turbine is used to generate green electricity for the seminar from the Lochbach , which runs through the large gardens of the seminar.

inside view

The inner area of the seminary is designed in a plain white. Many windows flood the building with daylight.

Architecturally speaking, the seminary church is an octagon and its tabernacle faces east. The seminary church and chapel share this tabernacle. The seminar church is the focus of the seminar: initially purely architecturally, because all areas of life in the building are arranged around it. On the other hand, the seminary church, as the place of the holy and the presence of God in the middle of the seminar, is spiritually lifted out of a consciously chosen meaning, since life in the seminary is built around the celebration of the Eucharist.

The ceiling painting was created by Peter Schubert and refers to the biblical passage Eph 4,10: "The same one who descended also ascended to the highest heaven in order to rule the universe". The strong colors of the painting refer to the style of baroque church painting. It takes up the subject of heaven, which is open to people. The theme of the sky also comes into play in the ceiling painting of the chapel.

The eight corners, from which the seminary church and the chapel are built, form an octagon and refer to the perfection with God as well as for the eighth day of creation, which indicates the eternal abode with God.

The parish festival of the seminary church is May 10th, on this day in 1987 Bishop Stimpfe consecrated the church. The seminary church is consecrated to the Holy Cross. Their titular feast is the feast of Exaltation of the Cross (on September 14th). There was already a house chapel in the old Dillingen seminary from 1603, which was consecrated to the Holy Cross.
