The Osnabrück Seminary is an institution for training Catholic priests. It is located on the Große Doms Freiheit in the city center district .
history
A seminar was founded in 1628 in accordance with the provisions of the Council of Trento for the preparation and further training of future priests in the Diocese of Osnabrück . In 1859 it was rebuilt after the upheavals of secularization . The current building was built in 1890–92 according to plans by the cathedral and diocesan master builder Alexander Behnes .
Organization and training
Today, the candidates usually receive their academic training at a university or college in Germany or in Rome. The support and the practical training take place largely in cooperation with the candidates from the dioceses of Aachen, Hamburg, Hildesheim and Limburg, so that the reality of the Catholic Church in north-west Germany becomes familiar. The Diocese of Osnabrück as an operational area includes traditionally Catholic and mixed-denominational regions as well as distinct diaspora areas and the city of Bremen. Working with other church workers, with many volunteers and with the congregations requires a good foundation and an open spirit. Social developments present the task of providing and cultivating appropriate expressions of faith, piety and community life.
The study of the Osnabrück priest candidates takes place today mostly in Münster or Frankfurt am Main .
