The Große Doms Freiheit is located in the old town of Osnabrück in the city center district . The space, which is mainly used as a parking area, is lined with numerous buildings belonging to the diocese.

location

The Große Doms Freiheit is located in the center of Osnabrück's old town , which in turn is part of the city center district . The square borders the cathedral to the north and is east of Hasestrasse . The river Hase runs behind the buildings to the east of the square .

Development

The rectangular square is lined with several buildings belonging to the bishopric. In the south there is the cathedral and, separated from it by the witches' walk , the small church . Furthermore, the Carolinum grammar school and the seminary for the Osnabrück diocese are located in the east . On the north side of the square is the Episcopal Palace of the Bishop of Osnabrück . In the west, the episcopal chancellery and half-timbered building frame the square.

In the center of the square is the Justus Möser memorial created in 1836 by the sculptor Friedrich Drake .

history

In the 9th century , before the actual city was built, the square was within the fortified Domburg . This area was directly subordinate to the diocese, which brought certain rights and freedoms for the people working there. Therefore areas have been a bishop's seat as precincts or Domsfreiheit referred to what has become the name of the place until today. After the bishopric was granted market rights around the year 900 , the first Osnabrück market took place on the square , which made it a development cell for the city. Later the market was held outside the Domburg on the market square built for this purpose , today the old town weekly market takes place again on the Great Cathedral Freedom.

At the southeast corner of the square, in front of the small church, there was the Bishop's Palace until the 13th century, which was later moved to the Martinihof in the new town. The square got its current appearance when the original, small-scale development gave way to today's in the 18th and 19th centuries. The rows of trees were laid out around 1787 and the square was paved.

traffic

The Great Cathedral Freedom is mainly used as a parking lot. On Saturdays, however, it is closed to cars as the weekly market takes place there. A road runs around the square to provide access to the adjacent buildings.
