Alexander Behnes (born January 3, 1843 in Papenburg , † October 12, 1924 in Osnabrück ) was a German architect of historicism . From 1870 to 1910 he was a cathedral and diocesan builder in Osnabrück.

Life

Behnes' father was a judge at the Papenburg District Court . Alexander studied from 1860 to 1864 at the Hanover Polytechnic , where he was a student of the leading architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase , and then spent a year with Friedrich von Schmidt in Vienna . After working in the construction of station buildings , he became a diocesan master builder for the Diocese of Osnabrück in 1870 at the age of 27 . In addition to the construction and restoration of numerous churches, he was in charge of the almost 30-year restoration and structural redesign of the Osnabrück Cathedral . After its completion in 1910, he retired.
