history

In the name Vrees (old: Weres 948) there is an old frieze . vris = moor, contain mold, cf. also Vrisebeke, Vrisendonk and Friesland . The name has only recently appeared again as Vrees. The place was initially Saxon, but came under Frisian influence and was later included in the Sigiltra (Sater) Gau. Hermann Abels suspects a typing or reading error for Weres and assumes a Frisian colony in this place.

coat of arms

Vrees coat of arms

Blazon : An oblique left bar is accompanied at the top by a green oak with a black trunk on a golden field and at the bottom by a golden miter, underlaid by an oblique left bishop's staff with an open crutch from which a panisellium with the letters SN hangs on a red field.

The blue bar stands for the name Vrees , which is the oldest spelling Weres in the deed of donation of Otto the Elder . Size from 947, as bog, swamp and flowing water can be interpreted. It also symbolizes the waters in the district of Vrees such as Dorfteich and Marka, whose name Grenzbach describes its importance in the course of history.

The green oak is a symbol for the many well-tended and therefore impressive oak trees in and around Vrees, which give the village its special charm. The oak also reminds of the former sovereigns, the prince-bishops of Münster and the dukes of Arenberg, who preferred the Hümmling as a hunting ground. The Eleonorenwald near Vrees is part of such former noble hunting and forestry areas and has been owned by the now non-profit Arenberg-Meppen GmbH since 1928.

Miter and staff in connection with the letters S. for Sanctus and N. for Nikolaus refer to the patron saint of the parish church, which is still the center of the community, which is visible from afar. St. Choosing Nicholas as the patron saint of a small village, far away from shipping and world trade, is historically interesting and therefore worth recording in the coat of arms. The colors red and gold express the bond with the other four municipalities of Lahn, Lorup, Rastdorf and Werlte, which together with the municipality of Vrees have formed the integrated municipality of Werlte since 1973 and whose coat of arms also features these colors. The Vreeser coat of arms was designed in 1997 as part of a celebration for the 1050th anniversary of the community.

Culture and sights

Buildings

Interior view of the Church of St. Nicholas in Vrees

The Heritage House Vrees since May 1992, the cultural center of the town. The half-timbered farmhouse from 1780 originally in Voltlage was demolished in 1989 as part of a job creation scheme and rebuilt in Vrees. In addition to the event rooms, the offices of the Vrees municipal administration are also located in the Heimathaus.

The Catholic St. Nicholas Church in Vrees was built in 1893/1894 according to plans by the Osnabrück master builder Alexander Behnes in a pure neo-Gothic style. In 1970 the church was enlarged by the builder and architect Josef Feldwisch-Drentrup from Osnabrück by extending the original south wall of the church with a parabolic extension. In keeping with the spirit of the times , the interior of the old church was painted white, but this was not very popular with the parish. For this reason, another interior renovation was carried out in 1988, during which the old colorful painting from the time the church was built was restored. In addition, the planning architect Ludger Sunder-Plaßmann from Münster reversed the polarity of the church axis towards the new high altar . A modern cross created by the sculptor Georg Hörnschemeyer from Osnabrück, which appears to be in the focus of a parabola , has been a special feature of the church since then, as there are only three crosses in the world.

societies

The Katholische Landjugendbewegung Vrees eV (belonging to the Deanery Hümmling and the Diocesan Association Osnabrück) is an association that was founded on February 2nd, 1954 by local youths. To this day it shapes the young people through various campaigns in the region. Entry age is currently 15 years of age. The majority of local young people join the KLJB when they reach the age of entry.
The KLJB Vrees eV is one of the most active associations in the community. Through many events such as B. the rural youth festival, the village cleaning and the religious weeks at Easter and Christmas, the KLJB receives strong support in the community. Among other things, this is due to the fact that many local residents are members themselves until they get married. The KLJB Vrees eV has also established itself through the exclusively non-profit behavior towards other persons and associations anchored in the statutes.

Sports

The sports club Frisia Vrees eV , founded in 1959, is the largest sports club in the municipality. It has two areas: football and dodgeball .
In football, Frisia takes part in the competitions with youth teams from G youth (mini football) to A youth. In recent years, the older age groups have increasingly sought cooperation with neighboring clubs in order to form youth game communities. In the men's area, two teams run for SV Frisia.
The dodgeball department is represented by a women's team, which, as a hobby team, usually organizes friendly matches.
