location

The larger southern part of the Eleonorenwald lies in the area of the municipality of Vrees in the integrated municipality of Werlte and belongs to the district of Emsland , the smaller part with around 750 hectares lies in the area of the city of Friesoythe and belongs to the district of Cloppenburg .

Nature reserve

Two small patches of Eleonore forest are as nature reserve and FFH area reported: The approximately 55-hectare Habitats and nature reserve " Langelt ", which is one of the few historic old deciduous forest sites of Emsland , an old oaks-Hudewald on a flat wave Geest with Remaining areas of former heaths with pipe grass and some pools with birch trees are traded as well as part of the almost 100 hectare nature reserve " Markatal ". Other areas of the Eleonorenwald are subject to statutory biotope protection .

Management

From 1880 to 1930, the dukes of Arenberg had pine forests reforested on former heathland for the production of pit wood. Large areas were cultivated with a steam plow system. The forest was named after the Duchess Eleonore von Arenberg. Since 1928 the Eleonorenwald has been managed by the "Arenberg-Meppen GmbH", today a non-profit forest and property management. After a hurricane on November 13, 1972 destroyed most of the mostly older pine forests, new forests were made of larch, spruce and Pine species and Douglas firs were planted so that today the forest area is characterized by mixed coniferous forests. The older pine and larch forests that still exist, especially in the east of the forest area, were underplanted with various tree species between 1990 and 2010 and have therefore been further developed into structurally rich, semi-natural commercial forests. Today, the Eleonorenwald is the economic forest with the most growth and reserves in the poorly forested Emsland. The Eleonorenwald is the largest part of the forest district of the same name, and the 230 hectare Kaufwald near the neighboring town of Markhausen in the urban area of Friesoythe also belongs to it.

tourism

The Eleonorenwald has around 40 kilometers of developed forestry trails on which hikers and cyclists can explore the forest. Between the towns of Neuvrees and Vrees there is a public gravel road with a total length of around six kilometers, on which there are two weather shelters built by the village communities of Neuvrees and Vrees.

Wisent enclosure in the "wildlife park"

In the northwest of the forest area there is a fenced hunting reserve on 1,000 hectares, which was created at the beginning of the 20th century as a game park for red deer. From 2005 to 2008 attempts were made to establish bison in this area. The bison is the last representative of the wild cattle species on the European continent. He has a head body length of a little over three meters, a shoulder height of up to two meters and a weight of up to a ton. On December 22, 2005, three cows and one bull were released into the wilderness area. Sightseeing trips with covered wagons with guided tours were offered by the Eleonorenwald Forest Service District. The project failed due to a dispute about the dangerousness of the bison between the municipality of Vrees and the district of Emsland on the one hand and the landowner Arenberg-Meppen GmbH, as the municipality wanted to make the site freely accessible to the public. The forest owner and the Ministry of the Environment as cooperation partners, on the other hand, considered the bison to be too dangerous to make the enclosure accessible to pedestrians and terminated the mutual usage agreement by mutual agreement. The herd, which had grown to eight bison, had to be relocated to the Döberitzer Heide in Brandenburg , the bison bull had to be given to Belgium because of its dangerousness. In the Friesoyth district of Neuvrees on Feldstrasse, a bison monument erected in 2008 commemorates the project that was ended later.
