About this picture

The city of Werlte is the administrative seat of the integrated municipality Werlte in the northeast of the Emsland district in Lower Saxony ( Germany ).

geography

location

Werlte is a few kilometers east of the Hümmling , a Geestrücken in the Emsland . Not far from the city are the headwaters of Nordradde and Loruper Beeke in the west and Mittelradde and Marka in the east. These rivers belong to the catchment area of the Ems , which flows 25 km west of Werlte and 10 km west of the Hümmlings. The Hase , another tributary of the Ems, runs 16 km further south.

City structure

In addition to the main town Werlte, the following localities also belong to the current city:

  1. Bockholte (with Gut Einhaus)
  2. Ostenwalde
  3. Wehm (with the mountain of people)
  4. Wieste

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities in the north are the communities Lorup (not directly adjacent) and Rastdorf , in the east the communities Vrees and Lindern ( district Cloppenburg ), in the southeast the city Löningen (district Cloppenburg), in the south the communities Lahn and Lähden (integrated community Herzlake ), in West the communities Sögel and Spahnharrenstätte in the Sögel municipality .

population

Werlte has, because of its centuries-long membership in the Prince Diocese of Münster, an originally strongly Roman Catholic population. This homogeneity was not broken until the middle of the 20th century. During the Second World War , forcibly recruited workers from occupied Poland and Russia were used on the farms as replacements for the men drafted for military service. Only a part of the displaced people who came after the war remained; many soon migrated to more densely industrialized areas such as the Ruhr area. The small Protestant church dates from this time. There was no migration of guest workers in the 1960s and 1970s. Werlte was decisively shaped by the Russian Germans who immigrated in the 1990s, mainly from southern Siberia and Kazakhstan. In addition, retirees from metropolitan areas who appreciate the nature and the tranquility of the surrounding area have also moved in over the past 20 years.

history

Stone grave from Werlte

prehistory

The passage grave " De Hoogen Steener " (Sprockhoff no. 830), 3 km north of the town, dates back to the Neolithic period (3500-2800 v. Chr.), And is the earliest evidence of a settlement of the room. With a chamber length of 27.5 m, it is the largest passage grave of all. While the stones of the presumably oval edging are almost completely missing, the once 39 bearing stones and 15 cap stones are largely present. In the district of Ostenwalde a barrow ( passage grave of Ostenwalde ) was moved and is now in the village, but on the roadside. The complex is on the street of the megalithic culture .

11th century

The village of Werlte was first mentioned in the 11th century as werlidde or werelithe as the property of the Corvey monastery around 834/854. The villages of the Hümmling were subject to tithing in this monastery in the high Middle Ages .

19th century

Like the entire Hümmling, Werlte was part of the Meppen office in the Niederstift Münster until 1803 . First it was affiliated to the Duchy of Arenberg-Meppen , then it was part of the French Empire (1810–1815) and in 1815 came to the Kingdom of Hanover, with this in 1866 to Prussia. The Hümmling was referred to as a free Hümmling in the Holy Roman Empire , because the farmers in him were not personally dependent, also due to his poor accessibility and poor living conditions.

A well-known resident of Werlte was Albert Trautmann (* December 21, 1867 in Sögel , † September 12, 1920 in Werlte), to whom a memorial was set on the corner of Kellerstrasse and Hauptstrasse. He is u. a. the author of the "Hümmlinger Sketches". Many institutions today bear his name, including the pharmacy he runs on Hauptstrasse and the Albert Trautmann School. He was buried in the old cemetery in Werlte.

21st century

Werlte has had city status since March 22, 2017.

Incorporations

With the law to reorganize the communities in the areas of Leer and Aschendorf-Hümmling on January 1, 1973, the communities of Bockholte , Ostenwalde , Wehm and Wieste were incorporated into the community of Werlte.

The structure of the surrounding communities is more of an agricultural nature, while the central town of Werlte has developed into a considerable industrial location and regional shopping center, not least due to the Emslandplan .

coat of arms

Coat of arms Werlte

Divided by red and gold, inside a megalithic grave in mixed up colors, below a five-spoke cogwheel. Werlte, known as Werelithe in 854 , has always been owned by the Corvey Monastery . The coat of arms of this monastery, the shield divided by red and gold, is the basis of the coat of arms of Werlte. There are numerous large stone graves in the area of the city, including the Hoogen Stainer with the longest stone chamber in Germany. As a symbol for the main occupations of the inhabitants (trade, trade, iron processing industry and textile industry) a gear was chosen, which with its five spokes symbolizes the togetherness of the places Bockholte , Ostenwalde , Wehm , Werlte and Wieste .

Town twinning

Since September 8, 2005 there has been a partnership between Werlte and the city of Lidzbark Warmiński (German: Heilsberg ) in Poland. The home parlor of the Heilsberg district community was set up in Werlte.

Attractions

  • The Theikenmeer and Bockholter Dose nature reserves are within the city . The Theikenmeer bird reserve, renatured in the 1970s, is a large nature reserve.
  • The large stone grave De hoogen Steener can be found a little outside the village . During excavations at the end of the last century, shards and flint tools from the period from 3500 to 2800 BC were found. BC, which are attributed to the funnel cup culture.
Bible garden of the parish of St. Sixtus
  • The Catholic Church of St. Sixtus is first mentioned in the year 1100 in the documents of the Corvey monastery . Even then it was consecrated to St. Sixtus (Pope of Martyrs). A first church made of boulders is documented for the year 1344, since in that year the Osnabrück auxiliary bishop Johannes consecrated the church on Elisabeth's day (November 19). An altar consecration is known from the blessed Niels Stensen . On his journey through the Emsland in 1682, the then auxiliary bishop of Münster consecrated the altar. The only existing Classicist building by architect Josef Niehaus was started in 1829 and inaugurated by the Osnabrück Auxiliary Bishop Carl Anton Lüpke on October 28, 1832. During the Second World War the church was destroyed after an incendiary attack and rebuilt after the war. Bishop Bering consecrated the church again on October 30, 1947.
The wall mosaic of 300,000 stones from 1979 is characteristic of the church. It was created by the Benedictine Sr. M. Erentrud Trost ( Varensell Abbey ) and takes up images from the Apocalypse of St. John . A stained glass window, in which the lamb from the St. John Apocalypse (Rev 5, 6-12) is shown, is decisive for the mosaic. With regard to the lamb, symbolizing Jesus Christ, the center of the mosaic is the sacrament table. The two fixed points are the tabernacle at the end of the table and the lamb at the head of the table. Around the lamb, figures from the apocalypse can be seen, which are also considered symbols for the evangelists and are also depicted on the pulpit . The font from the 12th century is particularly important . It is made from Bentheim sandstone .
  • The Catholic parish of St. Sixtus maintains a Bible garden in the center of the village . In the garden there are over 80 different plants related to the Bible.
  • The evangelical Lukaskirche is located in an expanded and developed Bartning emergency church . The emergency church was built as a “prefabricated house” according to plans by the architect Otto Bartning (1883–1959) on behalf of the Lutheran World Federation and was inaugurated on July 2, 1951. Due to the strong increase in the number of parishioners to almost 4,000 people, the church was expanded in 2003 by around 100 seats and an attached bell tower with two bells and an integrated chancel. The roll of documents laid when the foundation stone was laid on May 6, 1951 was also recovered and copied here. The church offers space for almost 300 visitors and invites you to worship on Sundays at 10.30 a.m.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Road traffic

Werlte can be reached from Lathen and the B 70 via Landesstraße 53. Lastrup and the B 213 can be reached via state road 837 .

Rail transport

Werlte is on the Lathen – Werlte railway line . The route is only served in freight traffic.

economy

Werlte is characterized by craft businesses and medium-sized companies. Mechanical engineering and the supplier industry for the Krone vehicle factory dominate. Furthermore, the trade is quite strong, as the closest medium-sized centers are all at least about 30 km away and a large part of the purchasing power remains in the town. Nevertheless, in 2001 - after an oversized expansion - a large furniture store had to give up, which was only recently able to reopen in a new guise.

The withdrawal of the Bundeswehr Transport Battalion 120 from the local Hümmling barracks (1968 to 2003), in which 4 million euros were last invested in 2000 to set up a training company, had a very negative effect.

In addition, the small textile factories were closed until the early 1990s. Agriculture has also almost completely disappeared; only in the villages of Wehm, Wieste and Bockholte there are still several full-time businesses.

The local vehicle factory in Krone produces truck trailers and semi-trailers with 950 employees . After taking over the majority of the former barracks site, around 30,000 vehicle units will be manufactured annually on an area of 70 hectares. This mainly includes semi-trailers, truck trailers and superstructures. In product development, the focus is on improving safety properties, i.e. protecting other road users. New semi-trailers with increased capacity are also being developed.

The delivery of the semi-trailers leads to a significant traffic load in the center, as almost all of them from the industrial area to the west are transported through the town center in an easterly direction to federal highway 213 and then on to federal highway 1 . The Federal Motorway 31 , which was completed a few years ago, plays a subordinate role here.

Others

A culinary Werlter specialty is the original “ Bookweit Janhinnerk ”, a pancake (“Pannekauken”) made from buckwheat seed flour and egg, which is served with applesauce.

A traditional spirit also has its origins in Werlte: " Echter Werlter Korn ", or simply the "Echte Werlter", has been distilled in Walter Deitermann's family-owned grain distillery in Werlte on the main street for many decades.

The Hümmling around Werlte has been developed for tourism and is valued as a recreational area. The Hümmling's excursion destinations include the Eleonorenwald , Clemenswerth Castle near Sögel , the Papenburg Meyer shipyard , the “ Transrapid ” magnetic levitation train (Lathen) and other museums and cultural monuments.
