The Varensell Abbey near Rietberg in the Gütersloh district is a Benedictine monastery in the Archdiocese of Paderborn . The abbey belongs to the Beuron congregation .

history

Varensell was founded in 1902 as the priory of the Benedictine Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament . The first sisters came from the Maria Hamicolt monastery near Dülmen . In 1948 Varensell was elevated to an abbey and has not been a Benedictine of the Blessed Sacrament since then. From the beginning there was a close relationship between the convent and the parish, which is also expressed in the common use of the parish and abbey church. A new church was consecrated on September 22, 1956. Subsequently, the convent oriented itself more towards the way of life and the constitutions of the Beuron congregation, in 1982 the Varensell Abbey was accepted into the Beuron congregation.
