St. Erentraud Abbey

The Kellenried Abbey in the district Kellenried the municipality of Berg in Ravensburg in 1924 as a Benedictine - monastery of Beuron Congregation founded. The existing monastery is designated as a cultural monument.

history

The first sisters came from the St. Hemma Monastery in Gurk , Carinthia , and from the St. Gabriel Abbey , Bertholdstein. The monastery was named after St. Erentraud , the first abbess of the Nonnberg Benedictine Abbey in Salzburg .

The Abbey Church of St. Erentraud was built in a baroque style by the Freiburg government building officer Adolf J. Lorenz on the western ridge of the Schussental . The foundation stone was laid on July 15, 1923. The architect combined elements of neo-baroque , art nouveau and new objectivity in the monastery building . The monastery was occupied on September 7, 1924.

After financially justified interruption of the construction of outdoor structures in November 1924, the church was still provisionally established on November 16, 1925 benediziert . In 1926 the monastery was elevated to an abbey . The altar was donated in 1930, the rest of the church remained incomplete.

From 1940 to 1945 the sisters were expelled from the monastery by the National Socialists and the monastery was confiscated by the Gestapo . It was used to house Slovenian forced laborers.

In the years from 1955 to 1965 the addition of the guest church, the west wing and the extension of the north side supplemented the monastery complex; the church was on May 15, 1958 consecrated .

From 1983 to 1985 the church was renovated. In the interior, the places of the liturgy , the altar, the ambo and the stele of the tabernacle , as well as the windows, the choir stalls and the two organs have been redesigned according to the plans of the sculptor Elmar Hillebrand .

In 2010 a "Friends of the Kellenried Abbey" was founded.

Design of the church

Altar island with tabernacle and altar cross

tabernacle

The tabernacle standing free in the room is decorated with representations of biblical scenes, the meeting of Mary of Magdala with the risen Jesus Christ ( Joh 20.11-18 EU ) is thematized in arched fields  , the conversation with the apostle Thomas is discussed on the left ( Joh 20.19 -29  EU ). The back of the tabernacle depicts a mercy seat .

Tabernacle stele and altar cross

The altar cross is designed as a tree of life in connection with the tabernacle stele . Leaves and buds are depicted on the cross connected to the bottom of the altar island. The cross bears a corpus Christi, probably from the 17th century . This is flanked by two modern bronze figures. They depict Mary with a chalice in hand as a symbol of the church and John the Baptist , who points to the corpus as the Lamb of God .

Medallion decorations of the altar island

The story of the First Covenant is remembered in motifs of the experience of God in medallions . The "stations of salvation" shown are:
