history

Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul

Until the 19th century

Berg was first mentioned in 1094 in a deed of donation from Weingarten Monastery . At that time the "Church of the Mountain" already existed. In the 17th century the population practically died out due to the Thirty Years War and the plague . Immigrants from Vorarlberg and Switzerland only slowly filled in the gaps. For a long time, Berg was part of the Swabian bailiff in Upper Austria . Due to the Peace of Pressburg , the place came to Württemberg in 1805 , where it was assigned to the Oberamt Ravensburg , the forerunner of today's district .

Wilhelm Gindele was the last democratically elected mayor before the " seizure of power " by the NSDAP in 1933. He was deposed in December 1933 and replaced by Max Schreiber (a candidate of the NSDAP) from the Ravensburg NSDAP district leader Karl Rudorf as part of the " Gleichschaltung " process . This also used the two successors Waldraff and Sterk . In 1940 , Waldraff volunteered to be deployed at the front in order to deal with a complaint from the police. With the first democratic election after the Second World War under French occupation, Wilhelm Gindele was re-elected. A street in the Vorberg district was later named after him. Mayor Grieb was, like his successor Hugger , mayor of the Ravensburg suburb of Schmalegg. Ms. Hugger was elected on July 14, 2019 with a voter turnout of 57.6% with 61.4% in the first ballot and is the first female mayor in Berger's history.

coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms, awarded on August 18, 1958, shows, based on the coat of arms of the Lords of Tobel , two diagonally crossed golden ladders in red. The colors were chosen based on the earlier affiliation of part of the municipality to the Upper Austrian Landvogtei Swabia .

Culture and sights

Buildings

Atonement cross in the thick forest
Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul
  • Burial mound ( Bronze Age ) and atonement cross (Late Middle Ages or later) in the Dickenwald
  • Remains of the moated castle of the Lords of Tobel in Burg bei Tobel (a brick ground floor and a late Gothic half-timbered tower are preserved)
  • Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul in Berg. The column basilica, which is essentially Romanesque, received a Gothic choir and a tower in 1474 . The main nave was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style in 1876 and last renovated in 1963–1965 (the neo-Gothic wooden ceiling and furnishings were destroyed again). The equipment includes a late Gothic crucifixion group, late Gothic figures of St. Peter and Paul and a Pietà from 1593.
  • Rectory from the Baroque period
  • Marienkapelle in Weiler, built in 1664

Benzenhofen Castle
  • Benzenhofen Castle was built in the historicist style by Otto Benze (who called himself Otto Benze von Benzenhofen )in 1898/99. It came into the possession of the Pfeiffer family through a foreclosure auction in 1932. From 1949 to 1952 Franz von Papen lived in an apartment in the castle, in which he wrote his memoirs.
  • St. Erentraud Abbey in Kellenried with the Baroque style abbey church built by Adolf J. Lorenz between 1923 and 1924. The abbey has a baroque nativity scene , the oldest figures of which date from the 17th century and which are exhibited annually from Christmas until February 2nd. In the monastery shop, nativity figures and candles from our own handicraft production are offered.

Regular events

Berger Alafanz
Mountain Festival Drummers
  • The Swabian-Alemannic carnival is organized in Berg by the Berger Alafanz fools' guild , founded in 1996 , and the Berger Tobel-Hexa fools' guild , founded in 2004 , which also take part in fools' meetings in the area. The figure of Berger Alafanz goes back to a ( unproven ) legend, according to which the original location of today's Catholic Church should have been different. The Alafanz but has, according to this same legend, the timber always supported the Nächtens to the site where the church was also built eventually. A story that was previously told in a similar way in other villages. The Berger Alafanz fools guild has approx. 240 members, including approx. 155 active members. The highlight of the Dorffasnet is the cart parade on the Saturday before " gumpy Thursday ". A colorful parade (2008: 21 vehicles) moves the approx. 4 km long route from the hamlet of Weiler over several stations to the hilltop, where a fool's tree is then set up. A climb to the summit with an 11% incline also earned this move the title “ Steepest move in Upper Swabia ”.
  • Since 1966 the children's and homeland festival Bergfest has been held annually in August with games and competitions for children and a "mountain festival shooting" with the crossbow for mountain people from the age of 40 (the " Swabian age ") and younger elected representatives . The elders have the privilege of shooting. The mountain festival is organized by the Berg Musikverein and carried out in cooperation with the Berg community. The drumming is a custom that is known in the Schussental through the school parties in neighboring towns ( Rutenfest Ravensburg , Welfenfest Weingarten) and is practiced in Berg by the adult drum group Bergfesttrommler . Crossbow shooting is also a competition that is held by students at the Rod Festival, but is held for adults in Berg.

Sports

The sports club TSV Berg 1959 eV was founded in 1959. The club is divided into four different departments: football , skiing & hiking , gymnastics & fitness and volleyball . The active soccer team plays in the Württemberg Association League (as of 2014/15).

Economy and Infrastructure

Berg used to be a small farming village and agriculture is still an economic factor, albeit a declining one. In 2000 there were still 62 full-time farms and 16 part-time farmers.

After 1945, Berg also became a residential community in the catchment area of the cities of Weingarten and Ravensburg. In addition to various craft businesses, the construction industry and transport companies, the textile and steel construction sectors are represented. At the same time, many new jobs have also been created in trade and services.

Employment structure

Allocation of jobs in Berg

Employees (total) 1,399 people
Manufacturing 997 people
Trade and transport 86 people
service 306 people

It is remarkable that 1,230 people (so-called “commuters”) commute in from the outside to Berg . That is 174 people more than, conversely, the 1,056 mountain rescuers who find work in other cities and communities in the area (as “out-commuters”). These figures also explain the high tax revenue in the community, which in turn allows financial leeway for important projects. The per capita debt in Berg is therefore below the state average of Baden-Württemberg . The trade tax rate is 330 percent.

traffic

Berg is on the Bodensee-Oberschwaben-Bahn (BOB) (stop: Weingarten / Berg). This breakpoint, almost on the boundary between Weingarten and Berg, came about in 1998 after the city of Weingarten and the municipality of Berg agreed to finance it largely from their own resources. The community is connected by bus lines with Ravensburg, Weingarten and other neighboring communities and belongs to the Bodensee-Oberschwaben Verkehrsverbund ( Bodo ). Berg is located directly on the 4-lane federal highway 30n and can be easily reached via the “Ravensburg Nord” exit.

Established businesses

Since 1972 Berg has been the headquarters of Rafi GmbH & Co. KG , a manufacturer of electromechanical components and keyboards that was founded in Ravensburg in 1900 and is now active worldwide. Since 2000, every four or five years an exhibition of the industry based in Berg has taken place.

education

The Berg primary school, which has several classes , used to be a secondary school with a technical secondary school . The last final class with nine students was adopted in 2014 and with its completion, the secondary and technical secondary school was closed due to a lack of sufficient student numbers. The school building from 1962 on the slope of the Kirchberg (with an extension from 1984), the neighboring gymnasium and festival hall from 1972 and the new sports hall from 2005 with the church, rectory and town hall on the mountain form the center of the community. On the roof of the school there is a citizen solar system for generating electricity from renewable sources. Contrary to the usual organizational form, this facility was not founded as a cooperative , but as a GbR .

There are three communal and one Roman Catholic kindergarten with a crèche for the youngest residents . The legal requirements for day care can thus be met.

The home school Martinshaus Kleintobel has existed in the suburb of Kleintobel since the 1950s . In addition to a secondary school (special school for educational assistance), the Martinshaus now offers a wide range of youth welfare services in Kleintobel and other places in the region and is operated as part of the Zieglerschen Anstalten Wilhelmsdorf .

The Volkshochschule Berg ( VHS ) has its organizational headquarters in the town hall, is part of the VHS Weingarten as a “Bergsenstelle Berg” and uses the rooms of the public school in Berg.
